Tire DOT production date - Too old?

If you were to order new tires, how old would you expect them to be? I just ordered a set of winters from Simple Tire and the ones I got are "2422", meaning they were made around the middle of the year in 2022. That seems a bit old for new tires. Contemplating if I should send them back or not.

My daughter just replaced a trailer tire and they told her it was new. It was dated 2021.

Lots of factors to consider. Will they get worn out from mileage in 3-4 years? Will the vehicle be traded in less than 4 years? If yes to either of these, why bother returning them.
Is there return shipping cost? Cost to return them may exceed the 2 year shorter life.
Contact the seller and see if they'll give you a some money back to keep them. They may give a substantial discount to avoid the return.

Discount Tire claims that 6 years is the age at which tires should be renewed. I saw first hand on a 2006 BMW 530i I owned but seldom drove what happens to aged out tires. After 8 years and 30k miles when I changed tires with good tread, the sidewalls split when they put it on the tire changer machine.

I just purchased new tires [Michelins at Discount Tire] for my wife's SUV. 3 were a current date code but the forth had a date code from 2022. I sent it back.

They are not too old. We are not discussing milk or bread here.
Tire manufactures warranties typically end at 6 years of tire age. Four years of use for average driver is 50,000 miles or greater. I'd use the tires.

In an ideal world, you should be able to demand tires less than 1 year old. I have always done this when buying tires from a local dealer, but online is not so easy. I think the bottom line is how much you drive, and whether you would wear them out in 3 or 4 years. I'm retired and don't drive more than maybe 5K/yr so this would be an issue for me.

For what’s its worth, they are Nokian Winters. I would hope to get 4 winters out of them.

Technically they are “new” as they haven’t been bought or installed. But, they are 2 yrs old. I bought a set of (4) trailer tires, “new”. When I checked them dates, I inquired as to being new and warranty. The warranty started when manufactured. The dealer called the supplier and they prorated my purchase price and gave me a 40% discount… my suggestion is to call where you purchased them and discuss it with them.
