Yesterday I received a small rock to the windshield that left a tiny little nick. We're talking about 4 or 5 mm at the most. It hasn't started spreading just one mark almost round in shape but very small. What is my best course of action? Can I go ahead and address the problem before it gets worse? If I take it to a place that replaces and repairs windshields are they just going to tell me that I have to wait until it gets bigger before they can do anything?

I would definitely address this right away. Had the same issue before and shortly after it expanded across the windshield. Especially now with the cold weather.
You might be able to stop it by using some superglue and scraping off the excess. Youtube as research is always good for that.
Good luck.

Got a nick in my windshield like that over a year ago. Rock ding, round small. Just didn't feel like replacing a windshield for that.
Went to the auto store and bought one of this repair kits. Stick the thing on the windshield, plunge the epoxy whatever down into the ding and let it dry.
The crack/ding has't run or gotten any bigger. I've done this on other windshields. The stuff works well in terms of keeping the ding from growing. Can still see it a bit though

Windshield repair kit available anywhere. I've used them for years, and it tends to hide the chip and avoid cracking for years and years.

I got a chip in my Maverick's windshield over a year ago. I used one of those kits, and it has disappeared, and held so far.

I had a tiny nick in my windshield also. I went into a glass place and ask them to look at it. Guy looked at it and said it dinged the first glass, but did not damage the plastic or something or crack the other window part. So I'm assuming there are three layers. And then he squirted a little jizz in it, and I walked out of there happy because they didn't charge me. They did it for free and all they said was end If you ever do crack a windshield where you need it replaced or fixed just remember us and I said ok.

Been like that for over a year and we've had rain, snow, freezing rain and bitter cold temperatures over the last few months and it's not any bigger than it was. That's what she said lol

However you fix it... the sooner the better. The chip I took care of immediately has held for over a year. The chip that I ignored for several weeks traveled fast and soon became beyond repair. I think I paid a glass place about 100.00 for the chip that I acted on quickly. Sounds like a number of people in this forum had great luck with a repair kit, also.

Some auto insurance policies will cover windshield chip repairs as a no-cost no-reported-claim benefit of the coverage. They would probably rather pay out a rock chip repair than a whole new windshield if it gets to that point if the chip repair wasn't done in a timely manner.

I'd take it to a shop that repairs and replaces windshields and ask them if it is too small to repair and you need to wait until it spreads.
That's kind of what I thought but I had the same thing happened about 20 years ago and it went from being very tiny to "I'm sorry we can't repair it it's too big of a crack" in Avery short time

The lady that repaired my rock chip this past summer said 1/4 inch was to large to repair.
I am on my second windshield. Last winter I went out to my Maverick after some freezing weather and found a crack across my windshield that was not there the day before. Best anyone could say regarding the cause was water freezing in a small crack or chip.

Most insurance companies will dispatch a truck to your driveway to fill the nick and most likely stop it from spreading. And most insurance companies will not charge you a penny for that. As always, you might have the insurance company that does not cover it.

I've had several nicks filled over the years and never spent a penny (USAA). I've also had to replace windshields when cracks were too large. And that gets expensive on my wife's Volvo.
