It appears, upfront the Maverick Lariat has the signature lighting, turn signals and three 'headlights' on each side. Yet whenever I see a picture from the front, only two headlights are illuminated per side.

Does anyone know if the 'third headlight' is an actual light, maybe a cornering light?

The 2 inner lights are the low beams, the inner 3rd light are the high beams. Check out this video at 1:45

Third one lights up when high beams switched on.

So the XL & XLT doesn't have the DRL on the top like the Lariat. What do they use as DRL's. My 2018 Escape does it old school. If I put the headlight switch on the auto setting (in the daytime), the headlights only come on at a lower intensity. Is it the same with the XL & XLT? Or do they not have some sort of DRL's at all?

Seriously don't understand the cost cutting sometimes. Why not have all models have the upper DRL's instead of just the Lariat?

Why have 2 different sets of gauges? I would think it would be cheaper to make just one across the board.

It's all part of the enticement to get a person to select the higher priced model. Much more profit there as compared to any cost saved by using same parts across different models or packages.

the turn signal is the DRL on lower trims

Really? Weird. Thought all DRL's were white. Can't see how amber turn signals would be bright enough as DRL's to be visible from a distance.

Are you sure? TFL has been pumping out Maverick videos recently and it seems like the low-beam headlights are the DRL. I agree that in some promotional videos it appeared that the turn signals were the DRL, but in review videos it appears to be the low beams.

See this video:

He's driving an XL. The low beam headlights are being used as DRL (skip to 7:20)

This video as well:

They are driving XLT. Skip to 11:28. Also using low beams as DRL (you can tell the headlights are off because side marker and turn signal orange bulbs are off)

Here's my guess, if you have your headlights set to auto the headlights are on, but if you have them set to parking lights then the turn signal lights will be on. I prefer the amber parking lights over the DRLs or headlights myself.

They look pretty bright in this picture from @PeterZ
