I went with the OEM tailgate cover. After using the current discount code you would see at the top of the accessories page, and applying remaining points you might have, you get pre-drilled holes and the spacer kit required for a somewhat reasonable price. Shipping is free to your dealer. The hitch is that the dealer probably won't get your contact information from the shipper, so you have to monitor the situation yourself, and call the dealer after a week or so.

Do a search for "TrailFX Tailgate Liner - RFMA22TG". A lot of retailers carry it and some of the deals are as low as $30 BUT the shipping varies a lot.
Here it is on Amazon for $47.30 with FREE delivery.

In my opinion the quality is just as good as OEM Ford and it's what I went with as my tailgate protector along with nice thick rubber bed mat.
Does it attach by removing factory tailgate screws & reusing them in predrilled holes in the protector?

Make one along with a bet mat by cutting an outdoor carpet for $20 plus an hour of labour's with a pair of scissors and a screwdriver and a couple of body washers to mount the tailgate part. Cheap, tough, easily cleaned and easily replaced, and looks as good as BedRug.

The TrailFX tailgate liner is pre-drilled and you attach with original factory tailgate screws.
If you order directly from TrailFX you can get free shipping to one of their local retailers. I was lucky enough to have a dealer in the vicinity where I live. You may also be able to take advantage of the free shipping if you have a retailer nearby. This is what I ordered from TrailFX

They also have a "tailgate liner hardware kit" which are some plastic spacers that are not really necessary but inexpensive so I purchased them along with the tailgate liner.

Best bang for the buck is leaving it painted steel. Let it get scratched a little, it'll add character.

Never. I live in Phoenix, so rain is not an issue. I also have a hard tri-fold bed cover. When I had the Blue AWD there was no bed cover, but still no rain. The mat is heavy enough to never worry about it blowing out on its own.
