Thanks for the link. Wow, I thought getting this would be a luxury but it seems like a PITA honestly. No real clarification on orientation of the strut and both ways seem to have issues. Thinking I’ll return it and just keep slamming the tailgate instead.
It's worth it for a cheap upgrade. The bolt that goes inside the tailgate is a PITA to seat. Tighten it down as far as it will go before putting in the tailgate. Then loosen just enough so it will turn into place.

My wife and son wanted it. Makes them opening and closing easier. But I have to admit I like it a lot. Just lift the handle and let it go, not worried about catching it when my hands are full.

I posted this in the other thread.

Large side always up to extend life of strut, oil is needed against seal to condition and prevent cracking / leaking gas.

Seen other sources saying same thing.

Until I saw the other thread and researched it some, I also thought it was cylinder down to keep oil in.
