Anyone know why Lariat Luxs have different APIM part numbers?

This part number is from a EcoBoost Lariat Lux, 4k

And this is from a Hybrid Lariat Lux

Not surprised with the suffix change since it's just the firmware version but why and "L" vs a "N" in the first letter?

Thats a good question. Trying to source parts for this I found different ford part numbers for basically the same parts. For example the ACM from an Escape I used is virtually identical to the F150. So I can only assume they use different part numbers for hardware that is running different AsBuilt configs or firmware.

So with Ford part numbers, the first block is a vehicle specific code. That’s why there is an L vs N (mav eco vs mav hybrid), the second block is the actual component part number, and the third block is the component revision.

Well that all depends on how much you value seamless wireless CarPlay. That’s about the only major difference between 3 and 4 at the 8” screen level. Since you have a lariat, you would just need the APIM at around $300. You would need to remove two pins from your current APIM connector and then just plug the sync 4 APIM in.

You and prop2431 have done a GREAT job figuring this all out.....Kudos to both of you!
I ordered an XLT and it appears there's a little bit more DIY work for those than for the Lariat. That combined with the expense (you said about $500) means this won't likely happen for me.
What I'd found here on these boards that will work for wireless carplay is this from Amazon.
And rather than pay Ford just over $599 for the wireless cell phone pad I found this also on Amazon that looks like it would be perfect (at a fraction of the cost)

Both of these combined is less than $100....so I believe this is what I'll do. No doubt Sync 4 is superior...and I won't have that....but....it will be good enough.

OK, but so far in comparing lots of EcoBoost and Hybrid module part numbers, I have only found 3 modules with different part numbers

Powertrain Control Module - OK, I can see this, different engines and eCVT
Body Control Module - not sure why but, OK
Accessory Protocol Interface Module - Why?

Or is it an early production EcoBoost and a more recent production Hybrid and they are installing a newer modules in both types now?

The official how to is live... This should provide everyone with the information they need to complete one of these swaps. Programming unfortunately got more complicated due to current events (Forscan is Russian in origin) but there are other options out there in case you are not comfortable using Forscan.

So I figured I would go ahead and start this thread. @propp2531 and I have been working in the background on the potential of swapping Sync 4 into our trucks. Non Sync 3 Maverick systems present a challenge since an APIM does not actually exist as a separate module. The screen and software are run directly from the ACM. This means an adapter harness must be made to add in the required APIM and the ACM has to be swapped for a sync 3 based ACM. Thankfully that is fairly easy with passthrough harnesses existing for the ACM and all of the required leads for the APIM connector exist on the OEM ACM wiring.

And for those wondering, this method would also work to add Sync 3 to non Sync 3 systems. Programming of Sync 3 would also be much easier, but where is the fun in that!

I noticed the HD option is not available in radio setup screen. Did you make it appear? Does HD radio work with this upgrade?

I hooked up my Sync 4 8" Nav APIM module in the truck. Everything boots up after I removed the APIM connector pins 53/54 but there is still some weirdness.

It's a AWD Lariat Lux w/ 4k FX4

• Radio control buttons on dash do not work. Steering wheel controls function though.
• Information chime settings appear in menu but are grayed out
• Seat control settings appear in menu but are grayed out
• Wireless carplay doesn't always work due to application projection not working properly

Below is the APIM code I've been using. Any ideas on how to solve the issues above?

My suggestion is to go with the ABD in the OP. That should get most things functional. Then use the sync 4 database to add the rest.

Check this thread out. Use the ABD in that thread as a baseline. That should get CarPlay working along with the radio buttons. Then use the database to find the right lines to modify to add the features you want.
