Hey was hoping to seek the forum’s collective help here. Looking to add a 2022 Maverick Lariat to our fleet of family vehicles. It’s a site unseen purchase, but from a trusted acquaintance. The only issue he noted was an odd one. Nothing I have ever heard about before and my google efforts so far have not turned up anything.

Has anyone experienced something similar to this or have a suspicion? Just trying to assess whether this is big fix or small fix type of concern:

“When driving slow and turning the steering wheel, when I bring it back to center it makes a sound like a small “dong”. This does not happen at road speeds, only slow speeds. It does this in reverse and going forward.”

Is the steering wheel itself making this sound? In other words, the sound originates from the interior and not from from the exterior like from a suspension part?

If it's interior, the only thing I could think of is the clock spring, but not sure why it would "dong".

Someone posted that when he drifted out of his lane he got a dong sound followed by a yellow framed pop up "driver needs to take a nap" or something like that.

That makes sense, especially with OP having a Lariat.

They sent me this video. Sounds like a thump each time. Indicates it was only at low speeds. Power steering pump? Never dealt with that issue.

OK, more of a "clunk" than a "dong". That sounds like something loose in the steering linkage or rack. It's definitely not the clock-spring as I suggested before.

Mavericks have EPAS (Electric Power Assisted Steering), so there is no pump.

Thank you, that last note is helpful. Need to read up more here it seems!

Yeah, when I read “dong”, the first thing I thought of is the chime telling you to “take control of the vehicle immediately” when you are using the autopilot. But that would never happen when straightening out the steering wheel after making a turn.
