I was wondering if anyone has gotten into their Maverick and noticed when turning the steering wheel, it doesn't steer quite right. There have been two occasions where I have turned it on, put it in gear, went to steer, and for some reason, the steering feels slightly disconnected and requires more input to turn. It normalizes once I'm further down the road but right when I get in, I feel something is off. It's as if the vehicle just vaguely turns in the general direction instead of being precise like normal. It's hard to explain and it's probably a very isolated issue, if not the only one on this forum. If anyone else has any input, I would appreciate it.

Hi there! This doesn't sound like the kind of experience we want you to have with your Maverick truck. If you can send us a private message with your VIN and dealership information, I'd be happy to look into things.

Funny your post came up because I'm having (for now) a very similar and unsettling problem with the steering on my brand new Maverick. My Lariat is barely one week old, but when we drove the freeway to see our Mid-State Fair two days ago, my steering weirdly acted up unexpectedly. So far it only happened at freeway speed, and I'm hoping it's simply my steering habits being learned for the truck's computer to get dialed in.

The odd steering symptom I experienced is when I'm in one lane and wanting to move over to another, the truck DID NOT IMMEDIATELY RESPOND TO MY STEERING INPUT AND CONTINUED DRIVING STRAIGHT FOR A FEW SECONDS. It feels like I needed to "force" the turn into the other lane, and briefly the steering/turning was certainly not automatic, instantaneous, or intuitive. It doesn't happen very often, but I've only driven it on the freeway just this once so far, but I would guess it has already happened 3-4 separate times on that single trip. That type of vehicle behavior is sketchy and unnerving, to say the least. Tomorrow we head down to L.A. where I'll put another 400 miles on it, so that should be a good test. If it still misbehaves, I'll bring the truck in to my dealer for follow-up, but I'd love feedback from others having steering issues with their Maverick too. I'm sure it's OK, but we'll see.

Is your lane keeping and accident avoidance on the most sensitive setting? Try turning them down or off and see if the concern changes.

Good luck

Did you signal your intent to change lanes? You could be bumping up against the lane centering feature of Copilot Assist if so equipped.

That definitely sounds like the lane departure system settings just being set to strict, but as I rarely use mine I can't say for sure I've necessarily experienced that. Next time I'm on the interstate (and it's not a hazard to do so) I'll flick it on and see if I notice anything; now I'm curious.

@SLOTOWNMIKE see the replies after your post. I too wonder if you signaled your intent to change lanes? If not, your likely experiencing safety features which are trying to help you maintain your lane.

Use your turn signal to signal your intent when you change lanes. It's the law, and your problem will go away.

Thank you everyone who replied! The lane centering assist feature - which I didn't even know this truck had - was indeed the "problem", not counting me. :) So now that I know, I will be taking advantage of this feature, with more attention to turn signals when changing lanes. I'm surprised and grateful to the several comments from the forum - and quickly too.
