Sport mode .... uggh

Yeah. I get that. My response was to counter the people that think that sport mode is some fast track to under three second track times to 60 MPH. Jarring and crazy. It's not. Seriously most four-cylinder sedans and small coupes can beat the heck out of the Maverick

I love the vehicle, but I won't consider it something that I want to test the performance on

Most 4 cylinder sedans have less than 200 hp. Camry 203, Accord 192, Altima 188, Civic 188. Note that all of these are more than a V8 Mustang in 1984, my benchmark. They cannot "beat the heck out of a Maverick." All hecks still available.

The original comment about too much power was the EB 250 hp. If those people think 250 is too much, they haven't experienced 850 RWHP, or a Mustang that runs the 1/4 in the mid 10's over 130mph.

For me, the 8f35 transmission in Normal and Eco mode upshifts way too early. Over time, I have found the Sport mode best in traffic because the Tow Haul is so much more aggressive when downshifting. When accelerating and the revs are to high, taking pressure off the gas pedal helps the transmission shift into a higher gear. Once on the highway, shifting from Sport to Normal drops about 1k rpm's. If I had my preferences, I would prefer a six speed transmission that allowed for shifting, like my 2016 Ford Escape; but overall like the Maverick better than the Escape (love the Mav's steel wrap around front bumper).

All new cars upshift too quickly, it's all about higher MPG, so this is nothing new. This is why manufacturers allow you to set what you want.

Real manufactures are getting into the truck game. Same with suvs and sedans. While tesla is not going away think it will be a tough 5 years for them.

My personal opinion that the Maverick is a sport truck by default.. Motor trend magazine recorded the Stock 2.0 AWD Maverick at 5.9 seconds from 0 to 60mph and that to me qualifies the Maverick 2.0EB as a sport truck so the sport mode on the Maverick is as useful as the same compared to Eco mode. The Maverick get the best performance for its class and best MPG if you choose the Hybrid. That’s why the Maverick is a big success and as an owner, this is the biggest bang for the buck on any purchase I made in the last 10 years !! Well bitcoin had it moments but thats a different story

Grasshopper, what you consider a sport truck others do not. Going fast in a straight line is one of the categories to make it a sport truck. How about handling, and stopping?

I only use sports mode when I'm driving interstates within cities and want that extra pick-up to escape stupid situations. I tried it driving through the mountains of NC, but I too noticed it seems to stick to gears a little longer. If you know that is what it is going to do, you can adjust your driving accordingly, but it is different than how it usually handles.

I otherwise keep the Escape on Normal unless it is raining heavily, in which I will jump it over to "Slippery." I imagine my habits will remain the same with the Maverick.

I'd say the hybrid is quite fast, it's all relative. Doing 0-60 in the 7 second range means you're keeping up with a Miata or gt86 in a straight line. That's pretty fast for a small truck that "only" has a 4 cyl engine. Again, it's all relative, a 7 second 0-60 would be dog slow for a super car, but lightning quick for a commercial vehicle.

It's that torque from the electric motor. From a 20mph roll the hybrid is quick for such a little engine

So I have had my 2.0L ecoboost AWD Maverick for almost 6 months now and in that time I've kept it in normal mode. Just for kicks recently I put it into Sport mode. Ugghh. To me it is very much unusable to the point I am wondering if something is wrong with either the programming or the transmission. I know that modes are electronic and not mechanical and the computer is just changing shift points and the timing of such. Sport mode on the Maverick as on other manufacturers that use it, holds the revs longer, and higher it seems. On my Maverick, the problem is is that it seems to hold high revs TOO long or when it shouldn't. Yesterday in Sport mode it was doing like 2500 RPMs at 40 mph. Seems a bit high to me since our Mavericks are high geared and are doing under 1800 RPM's at 60 mph in Normal mode. When I come up to a stoplight/stop sign in Sport mode, it holds the RPM's way too high when to me it should be lowering them since I am coming up to a stop. It's like someone in a manual that downshifts into 1st gear when coming up to a stop before they should and the engine is revving in too high an RPM. Just doesn't seem like it is behaving right or is this how Sport mode is supposed to behave in people that have used it regularly in thier Mavericks? If so, it is terrible IMO.

Sport mode gives me enough acceleration to pull away from those Toyota tacos that pretend to be cactus gray as well. I really like sport mode in the hybrid when I want to feel like I have a powerful truck. It’s pretty quick in sport mode the hybrid never had a problem with shifting or not. I know what it’s doing. It’s a big loop.

I have had my Mav for 5 months and 5k miles. I accidentally put it in sport mode for about six blocks and two stop lights. My wife was panicking and kept saying: What is wrong with the truck??" I took me a bit to figure out what was "wrong". Just saw the initial red on my display and thought the engine had a mind of its own. Other than a one time, on purpose, for a 0 to 70 test, it has not been used. No plans or need for future use. Whatever floats your boat........

The simplest way to explain sports mode is it changes the linear response of the throttle that's the way it tricks you. The operator of the vehicle is pressing the accelerated down 10% the computer is opening the throttle 20%. With the addition of Cam advancement you get one heck of a ride. Not sure if the 2.0 hold the waist gate for extra boost however that the way it operates on my 997.

Ever sense installing the race chip, when I accelerate in sport mode, my wife says dang.

I only use sport mode to elicit that response now.

This thread is such a Hodge podge of different opinions. I think that speaks volumes, showing that "sport" means something different to everyone. Likely based on there own previously set expectations and driving experience.

The person who mentioned torque bands probably has the most relatable reasoning as to why the engineers programmed this sport mode to work as it does.

I'll admit the engine braking was a surprise, but makes sense. Surprising especially to people who normally drive automatics aimed at efficiency that like to coast. However it's sound logic to keep the car in gear and in the sweet spot of the torque band for when the driver decides to accelerate.

The rest of this thread is kinda crazy how much opinions differ. It's like hearing a bunch of an surfers argue over how to ride the best wave.
