Traveling on the interstate now and then we get a message on the screen something like this: "Speed Check Ahead." Then soon there is a progress bar on the bottom of the screen.

What is this?

thanks,
Donald

Probably using Google Maps/Directions? This is a 'marker' another user put on the road your traveling during a commute they had/shared ahead of you where they 'tagged' a Speed Check..aka Law Enforcement vehicle down the road potentially checking speeds. Its similar to using the Waze App and people tagging Authorities. Just gives a heads up that someone may be down the way looking for speeders/sighted so to speak.

I've looked for law enforcement vehicles and saw none. And why would there be a progress graphic if they were involved? Using apple maps.

I believe the progress bar tells you how close you’re getting to the reported law enforcement vehicle. But more often than not, the vehicle has moved on by the time I drive through these “events.”

It doesnt essentially mean you will see them.

A.) They were spotted on a frontage road/passing/leaving but where "sighted."
B.) Old Update (not that old, but old enough for the vehicle to have moved on.

The Progress graphic just mimics other apps like Waze in a way. I wanna say there was a lawsuit awhile back to change things thats how they went about it. In my opinion Google/Apple are less informative about Law Enforcement updates. On my normal commute I always use Waze. Especially for long trips. That is golden for spotting Law Enforcement. Also its easy for you to help update when you see them too.

So at the end of the day, is this message in essence a radar detector?

Radar for speed is not used like it used to be. More common is Laser and VASCAR. Radar isn't vehicle specific like laser and vascar. Vascar is normally done via air as it is a distance figure. White lines posted along roads, not the lane markers are painted at a certain distance apart, and they use that distance to calculate speed. Laser, once pointed at a vehicle give that vehicle's speed, unlike Radar that gives the speed of the closest vehicle to the Radar.

Waze gives extra eyes to look out for all three.

Yes. And even at the beginning of the day.

My google maps show the speed traps ahead and a radar gun icon on the map. Also, a number showing how many people have reported it. It seems to be pretty accurate, although certainly not 100%.

I've also seen "Road Hazard" ahead. The last time I got this notification, there was a huge piece of a semi tire in the road, about a mile ahead!

At least with Google maps usually other users report a speed trap. That doesn't mean it's necessarily still there though. I think it started with Waze but then Google took over waze. So if three or four people see a speed trap and report it it'll show up but the officer might move along by the time you get there.

NO by how it works, sorta by how you would use it.

NO because the phone isn't detecting any law enforcement at all. It's other users of the app who have reported a speed check. You wouldn't know how long ago or if the cop is gone giving someone a ticket.

Sorta because you would check your speed to make sure you wouldn't get caught speeding.

The cops or enforcement use the same app I'm sure. Not there button for them...or they simply pulled out and left before you got there 5,10,15min after marked.
