South Carolina DMV question: how long 'til plate delivery?

I bought my truck three weeks ago, and I'm wondering when I might expect to get the license plate from the SC DMV. Can you tell me how long this generally takes?

You might call/ask the DMV.

I live in Arkansas and the registration/tag procedure is very different. When you buy a new vehicle here, you get a paper plate at the stealership. You have 60 days to pay sales tax, register and tag the vehicle at the DMV. The stealership does none of that. You can reuse a plate if you kept one from your previous vehicle, or you have the option to get a new one at the DMV immediately. No waiting.

The DMV is fast in SC. Usually within a week at most from the time the paperwork is done at the DMV. The thing that will take time is the dealer... Charlotte dealers have to send a person from the dealership to a DMV ( they usually go to the one that is just down the street from carowinds ) and they usually only do a SC dmv run once every few weeks. And then at that point they usually have the tag mailed back to the dealer, then the dealer will mail it to you or call you to come to the dealer to pick it up.

From what I understand, dealers generally employ a third-party entity to deal with out-of-state registrations. This may be the case since you bought the car in North Carolina and are registering it in South Carolina.

We leased our Maverick from our dealer in Michigan, and we are in North Carolina. This adds one little measure of complexity, since North Carolina apparently can’t understand lease cars. Almost every action that has required us to go to the DMV regarding leasr cars has been problematic because they just don’t get it here.

All that being said, we took delivery of our Maverick on October 7, and it came with a temporary Michigan paper license plate, good for 60 days. The real NC license plate showed up last Friday, not from the North Carolina DMV, but from the third-party company that was handling it for the dealer.

I bought mine in FL 9/1, dealer used a nationwide tag/title company. I got the SC county tax receipt dated 9/17, tag finally showed up 10/11 Fedex from New Mexico. I live 2 miles from DMV HQ in Blythewood.

FL temp tag expired 9/30.

Same story here, bought in Charlotte early August, SC plates didn’t come till last week before paper tag expired. There was some SC specific form that the dealer didn’t do at first, have to provide proof of SC residency, so hopefully they took care of that.

Is it a custom plate? That might be taking a while.

I'm not sure how SC works as in Alabama, we pay the dealership sales tax and title, but have to pay for registration to the DMV. Unless you want a custom tag, you walk out with a plate.

Alabama also allows transferring plates from prior vehicles if trading in, making the process of registration something you can do online. This is great as Alabama will prorate both vehicles. I bought in July for plates that expire annually in September. So, Alabama gave me a credit on old vehicle for August and September and only charged me for August and September on the Mav.

For what it's worth, and no help to you, Maryland dealers issue a permanent plate with the new vehicle. I am amazed that ALL states don't do it, and eliminate the silly paper plate and the wait for the permanent plate. Beautiful truck, BTW, same color as mine.

That's classic. It would be nice if the dealer said something like 'we can take care of this for you, but it will take five weeks, or you can stop over to the neighborhood DMV and it will take an hour...' give us a choice in the matter...

I think the key for you is auto insurance. If you've updated yours with the Maverick, you should be ok. I would keep the paperwork from the dealer in your car (or a copy) just in case.
