Living for years on the plains between Kansas City and the Rockies, I have seen blowing snow pack in the engine compartment until it chokes air flow and kills the engine. I have had to stop every 15 miles or so and clean the headlights (quartz) by hand just to see the highway. Snow drifts so big there is no way to drive through them. You can get stranded out there in a heartbeat. We always kept down sleeping bags and emergency provisions with us during the winter months. I learned quickly to put chains on the front tires of my 4x4, that way you can back out of what you shouldn't have driven into. IMO every region has it's own set of weather issues so learn from the locals.

Tip from the frozen north. To knock off a Snow Turd (ice build up in wheel well) use your heel, not your toe!!

Unless you have steel toes you may be one of many that end up in the ER
Been there and done that, well not the ER trip but learned that lesson in the same way.

I'm dating myself but back In 1983 HBO had a show call not necessarily the news and they had a snigglet segment of made up words "fenderbergs" was the first one I saw. I still call them that.

I've forgotten a lot of sniglets over the years, but that's a good one! I'm always reminded of NNTN when I hear the guitar riff from Eric Clapton's "Motherless Children", which was the theme song for the show.

Yup, unlike the old incandescent and halogen bulbs, the LED headlights do not generate enough heat to melt off the ice. Its a disadvantage of the more efficient bulbs. I find that I have to keep stopping every hour or so to uncover my headlights again and again. Its too bad that Ford elected to make the 25 refresh frontends look stupid instead of doing some airflow work to keep them cleared in northern weather.
You might think that LED’s are all doom and gloom if all you know is LED’s and grew up hearing glory stories about incandescent lights.

But I grew up in the era of incandescent lights, when there were no LED headlamps. And when in a snow storm, we still had to stop every half hour or so to clear the snow from our headlights. Even though the heat from the headlamp slowed down the rate that it snowed over, it still got snowed over. After all, we’re talking about a 55 watt headlight, not an 1,500 watt space heater. And the decrease in light output is not an all or nothing phenomenon; the light output drops as the snow covering gets thicker. And since LED lights put out 6 times the brightness than incandescent headlights did, you can wait until the snow is 6 times as thick before you have to stop and clear the lamp cover.

As someone that has lived through incadenscent, halogen, HID (xenon) and LED lights, I’ll take LED over the rest, any day, every day and all day.

Old school headlights were so dim that you had to slow down at night because the brightness was so low that you couldn’t see far enough ahead of you to safely drive at freeway speeds. It truly felt dangerous to drive at night. Now, even though my eyeballs are 40 years older and don’t work as well, I feel totally comfortable driving a modern car at 80 mph on the freeway in the darkest part of the night.
