I changed mine to RANGER.

TBF, I added the black letters but I think the best case is to just leave them. It's a cheap mod, but totally pointless. The more I see people adding these things the more I just want to go back to stock

As for smoothing it out... unless you are willing to bondo and repaint the tailgate (I have no clue what it would actually take), I don't think there is much else to be done.

I think if you get a grinder you could just grind the letters down. Then get a can of primer from Home Depot. They also probably have a color that will match your truck.

I am sure it will look great after you are done.

Cut a piece of sheet metal that fits the area cut the tailgate weld in the new piece some filler then paint. No biggie shouldn’t take but a few days.
