Shifter change wish

I drove a 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe today. The shifter is a flat stub on the steering column. I hope Ford does this type of shifter in future Mavericks. Turn silver knob forward for Drive, backwards for Reverse and push a button on the end for Park. I just never warmed up to the round knob in my 2023 Maverick.

Sounds like a accident waiting to happen. That is a worse idea than the rotary. How about a 58 Dodge push button shifter?

my 63 Dodge Dart had a push button shifter and a lever beside it for Park. That Hyundai shifter actually worked very well and doesn't interfere with your driving at all.

Mercedes Benz and a few others also use column mount twist shifters. I love column shifters. Honda puts theirs on the centger dash, which is also loved by many.

As a taller individual who spent years dealing with those center console shifters that so many seem to LOVE for some reason I can't wrap my head around, I appreciate ANYTHING that isn't that old approach.

For years, every last one of those lined up perfectly with the side of my right knee!

I am SO THANKFUL that the auto makers have decided to move on.

I prefer the knob. If there is a pushbutton, I'd prefer it be arranged in the traditional PRNDL pattern either vertically or horizontally. The Lincolns use the push button style located on the dash. It reminds me of my parent's 1963 Dodge. It had RNDL buttons. But park was a lever that moved to the right. That put it in neutral, then you pressed the button. But to put it in park, you simply moved it to the left. It automatically pushed in the neutral button as the lever engaged park.

I don’t mind the rotary shifter. I would like it more if Ford put the Auto Stop Auto Start disable in place of the L on top of the dial. Easier and more convenient to deactivate while shifting from park to drive.

Starting in 2013 when I bought a CPO 2011 Lincoln MKX...push button shift on dash was easily adapted to. traded in for 2021 Corsair with the "piano button" style shift on dash...again, easily adapted to. Traded for 2021 then 2022 Bronco Black Diamond...back to center console mounted shifter......no biggie. 2023 Explorer with rotary dial...took some time to get a feel for it...especially when parking brake would apply when you shifted to park. Did that a few times while parking or doing 3 point turn...oops, gotta disengage parking brake each time....a little awkward....2025 Mav Lariat hybrid....same dial but no auto PB engage .....just gotta remember what direction you are turning...you think you are turning to reverse but I found myself turning in direction of drive....on Explorer, you could not turn it past drive....it would stop. Now, it just will continue to spin which I contend is a minor distraction, but with all things....you get used to the feel and just need to pay closer attention while shifting.

If the lever is there I'd rather it be more of a traditional column shift. Quick hit up/down to change. Don't need to finesse a small knob.

The Silverado EV shifter isn't too bad.

I like the dial shifter. Don't even have to look. One click right for R, all the way right for D. Easy and not in the way of anything.

I always preferred the center shifter with 4 in an H pattern and reverse to the left and up! Works especially well with a 400 c.i., 350 hp big block in a 2-door coupe, preferably black, with the letters GTO on it! But that would take me back 55 years... Dreaming and drooling!

For my Maverick, I would prefer a little stick with PRND on it, but I guess I will take the rotary over push buttons just to differentiate between shifting and other vehicle functions.
