I had a miserable time with Android Auto about 6-8 weeks ago. I did everything under the sun to fix it - even a hard reset on my phone. It quit working in my 2018 Super Duty as well.
turns out it was an Android software update bug. it's since been fixed with another phone patch. I have a Samsung Galaxy S21.

When I first connected AA to my maverick there were a few issues. Uninstalling and reinstalling AA on my phone fixed everything.

Update from the OP. I think I have this working now and I have tried many different things with the settings, but what may have made the difference is the simple change out to a better USB cable. It's possible that the one I had been using had limited functions. Of course I messed around with so many other settings, that I can't really be sure exactly what it was I did. 😄. The good news though is that I can both send and receive texts via Android auto with notification pop-ups on incoming texts in the ability to have the system read the texts to me. Very cool!
