To those still waiting: WWYD? What Will You Do if this happens to you?

I've decided to walk. If dealer demands markup, I'm going back to the (inflated) used truck market.

Probably won't happen to me b/c many folks ordered with just a self-signed DORA but I have a dealer countersigned Purchase Agreement with OTD price. But just encase it does -- ya never know -- I'm walkin away.

Our wallets are power.

What would I do?
Here is how I set things up to avoid this problem.
Ordered an XLT on 6-12 but changed my mind and had the order changed to a Lariat on 8-03. Having read on this forum about dealers maybe being shady I went across town and ordered another Lariat.
Second dealer matched invoice price and threw in the paperwork fees as well. Got a signed contract and paid no deposit.
Turns out the first dealer is good to go at MSRP and will honor finance rate of 0% for 36 months.
First one is to be delivered early May and 2nd one is built but waiting for shipping.
I will now have to make a decision as to which to keep and which to buy and sell for well over MSRP.
Funny how things can work out.

No Ford would never do this.

If Ford tried then:

First Ford would be sued by both the dealerships and the State itself.

Second this would punish all the good dealerships in the State because of the bad apples.

Third the investors would be up in arms and also sue because of the massive loss in revenue and profits.

You seem to be only looking to the past and ignoring what is happening right now.

Ford did look at the their past and acknowledged mistakes and have made changes now where it could.

With the Ford F150 Lightning Ford has told the dealers that if they charge customer orders by either moving up in line or paying more than MSRP those dealers would be penalized with reduced or no allocations for stock orders.

Ford has also stated that this new policy would affect other model lines going forward.

I don’t understand how you can buy a truck without a deposit and signed bill of sale.

This wouldn’t fly where I live - but you need to have a bill of sale and deposit to show intent to purchase. No deposit = no commitment.

anyways

My dealer said they were not taking deposits because it was easier for them when a customer cancels, so yeah that’s not always an option

This is classic bait and switch and possibly consumer fraud, I think if this happens to people they need to bring it to the AG’s attention.

From whom and what exactly are you contracting for, regarding "buying" from a "dealer"? If you have read (and understood) an automobile sales contract, you know that you are contracting with the dealership for the purchase of an automobile. Do you think it's about something else? If so, what?
You fail to realize your pomposity answers miss every sincere point. Fact! A dealer is nothing more than the intermediary in the "DELIVERY" of a new product, made by a third party, and who hasn't signed anything protecting you! But you keep on spreading misinformation! Look forward to your posting of the ironclad contract you allege helps Mav. buyers if only they were smart enough to require the dealer to sign it! Continue making screwed customers feel they did something wrong. Sign here!______________

I
I ordered a loaded Lariat, AWD from Jefferson Ford in Jefferson,Ga, in July of last year. I was quoted a price that was the actual MSRP at the time. I gave them $500 down, got a signed contract and took delivery in mid March. This is the price I paid even though the MSRP had gone up around $900! Know your dealer and sales person! This is how Jefferson Ford has been in business for 100 years!

If you custom order a Ford vehicle and want to pay MSRP, please do NOT use this dealer. You've been warned!

This is my experience with this dealer. I just want to get the truth out about my experience.

After reading tons of websites and forums I decided to order a Maverick. In August 2021 I went on Ford's Maverick configuration website and ordered a Maverick Lariat Lux Hybrid. The MSRP was 31k. I'm new to my area and randomly selected a dealership close by.
I went to the dealership and asked 2 questions based on my research and reports on Bronco markups.

1. Are you guys going to charge a deposit on my order? The sales manager said, "No".
2. Are you guys going to sell me the Maverick at MSRP? The same sales manager said, "Yes, we will add a dock fee less than 200 bucks".

They copied my DL and I signed paperwork. I was not given a copy. Months later I realized this could be a mistake.

Months went by while I patiently read about deliveries and dealer experiences on the Maverick Chat forums. I also read about Ford's disappointment with dealerships marking up custom orders like mine. I also learned many dealerships are indeed selling Mavericks and Broncos at MSRP. I even learned about Smart Vincent, a dealer tool to see what promos were available during the order process.

Months go by..

My sales person texted me that my Maverick had arrived at the dealership. I told them I was closing on a house in around 5 business days and I was buying it for sure!

I got a text back, "no problem we'll keep it in the showroom til then".

The next day I get a text that the GM was adding 5000 dollars to my vehicle. I mentioned that I was told the vehicle would be sold to me at MSRP. They said that's a decision coming from the GM.

Based on what I had seen on YouTube videos and the Maverick Chat site I called the Ford complaint line several times.

Responses ranged from, "The dealers can do what they want. " to "Ford is penalizing dealerships if they charge over MSRP on custom orders by reducing allocations."

One person on the complaint line even said,"Because of franchise law Ford is limited on what they can do." They mentioned, "try talking to the GM at the dealer".

So that's what I did.

After arriving at the dealership. (haven't closed on my house yet) I politely asked to speak with the GM. My salesperson escorted me to the GMs office and told the GM, "I was just letting the customer know we are adding a market adjustment of 5000 dollars to his Maverick. The GM said and I quote," No, the markup 7500"!

After waiting 8 months only to get sucker punched by the dealership.

Trying to keep my cool I stepped into the GMs office.

I told my story as above, and about the 2 questions I asked.

The GM responded, "We instruct all of our sales people that we don't sell any custom orders at MSRP. If you don't buy it we will sell it for 10 thousand over MSRP."

My response, "Is it possible that my order went in before your instructions to you sales team?" This was 8 months ago.

I also mentioned the recent communication from Ford to dealerships about charging over MSRP on custom orders.

Long story short. He wouldn't budge from 7500 over MSRP until I showed him my text from the sales manager the day before that showed the 5000 markup.

Why am I negotiating a 5k markup?

After closing on my house I ended the truck with the 5000 dollar markup.
Gues what happens next they try to sell it to me at 4.9 percent interest. I had to insist they look it up on Smart Vincent and only then they gave me the 1.9 interest that was on Ford's website when I configured my truck.

Can't wait for the Ford survey.

I've got 5 thousand reasons to expose this dealership and warn others.

Please repost my story.

Love the truck, hate my deal.
lf it makes you feel any better the Maverick hybrid is like the number one marked up vehicle right now and the average markup is 20K. That said you were lied to.

You are incorrect, a dealer is not just. an intermediary for the delivery of a vehicle. The dealer owns the vehicle and they set the price. You are purchasing from the dealer not Ford. That said you got screwed because they reneged on your agreement. Contact the GM and owner, tell them you are a member of this forum and you will let everyone know your experience, and let them know you will flood the internet with poor reviews. You have to come across as if they can still earn your satisfaction, or they will just write you off as there was no benefit for them.

Fuckn shady dealership.

Step out of your Maverick "bubble" and visit other car lots / manufacturers. EVERY new car on EVERY dealer lot I have visited has an ADM added to MSRP. But, don't trust my word, go check it out for yourself.

I will say that Subaru told their dealerships to knock it off. article

" The CEO outlines no punishment but reminds retailers they aren't just any car dealer, referencing the company's ethos. "Taking advantage of the current market imbalance between supply and demand is something a "car dealer" would do...it's not something a "Subaru retailer" would consider doing."

The Hyundai dealership by work doesn't charge ADMs and the huge Toyota dealership about an hour away (Longo I think) doesn't as well. It takes calling around. I called around to dozens of dealerships in my area. First question I asked was are you charging ADM on ordered or stock units. If they said yes, "Thank you for your time" and hung up. I'm sure several were pissed off.

What !!!

That is in no way true.

iSeeCars shows the 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid is marked up an average of 25% or $5,601

https://www.iseecars.com/new-cars-with-greatest-price-hikes-study

There maybe some who are marking it up by $7,500, $10,000 or even higher but those number are not the average because some are also doing $1,000, $2,500 or $5,000 which drives the average lower than those peak numbers.

So again the average is $5,601 not the hyperbol $20,000 you state.
