So this should be called the Ford Tracking and Snooping service.

Even though it does seem helpful, the tracking is a bit concerning. If Ford would integrate this data with google, apple, facebook, gasbuddy, expedia, hotels.com, ... then I will be set as I drive around. :ROFLMAO:

On a serous note, it would be useful if the customer had access to the real time tracking, as it would be great to be able to configure some rules/trigger. For example, I would like for my garage door to start opening as the vehicle is nearing the home. To help provide a workaround for not having any built-in support to open garage doors or a dedicated place to mount/hide/activate a standalone remote control.

The battle and war have already been lost. Resistance is futile.
If I recall correctly, ONSTAR was recently sued for this. Still actively tracking vehicles even though there was no plan. Don't know the outcome, but I don't really think there is anyway for them to really turn it off.

Bet you can be tracked even closer with that cell phone you carry in your pocket.

I usually put my phone in airplane mode when going on a road trip. As I don't want to be disturbed or worry about the battery. But my vehicle is old without a bluetooth stereo, charging ports, etc.

Still it is one thing to be knowingly tracked through a smarthphone versus the vehicle. There is a safety aspect to having your vehicle tracked , but will Ford disclose who they resell the information to? Hopefully they will provide a lojack service for law enforcement if the vehicle was stolen or there was some suspicion of foul play. But there must also be an aftermarket for faraday cages to help avoid surveillance.

Oh lord, any modern car can be tracked without an app.
Do all modern cars have an always on cellular connection? I thought this was still a work in progress for most vehicles, that it would not become prevalent until there was more 5G/internet-of-things/driver-assist features. Where the customer paid for a data service. But I have not been keeping up with new car releases.

Or maybe you are speaking of license plate camera/trackers.

I have my phone with me when I drive. I have a navigation system in my car. I have a directional display on my dash. I absolutely assume that somewhere in all of that, some level of detail about my location is available to Google. And if Google knows, then it would be hard to claim that there's no data collection system related to me and my vehicle taking place. It just is.

Sure, but the claim/question was that all modern cars can be tracked without an App. I was trying to better understand that comment. To understand what technology is there already without the owner/driver using their phone or navigation system. Not to be obstinate, but all our vehicles at home are old and I have not paid very much attention to what Ford or the others are doing. As I thought there was limited tracking to this point, certainly nothing that the owner would not know about. Such as the gadget that can be installed onto a car for tracking in order to get lower automobile insurance premiums.

Most modern vehicles do have cell modems in them. As stated earlier in this tread, OnStar was an early version of this, but a quick search of my phone’s app market shows an app for almost every vehicle manufacturer offering lock/unlock and location features. Welcome to the 21st century! Don’t expect any of your information to be private.

Nope, our Honda CRV gets software updates wireless, my BMW M5 the same thing, I'm sure most if not all new cars do this, it's cheaper than having the owners bring their cars to the dealer.

I didn't mean to imply that a home wifi connection was required, only that it was a possible option for people that didn't want to pay for the Fordpass connect internet access.

*Note* If the Fordpass remote start will work anywhere without an active internet connection in the vehicle, I will be the first to admit that I was wrong.
There is NO FEE for using FordPass! Let's put this to rest, for cryin' out loud...
