Recommended tires for my XL ?

Hey all I have the stock conti's on my truck and they are driving me nuts. First off in the rain I will slide off of a stop light .... they still have like 90% of meat on them so before winter and before the next rain storm I am looking for a good stock size upgrades. I would like a smoother ride too (my dad has the tremor and its a bit smoother them my truck ) I was leaning towards goodyear or Michelin but I wanna hear what all of you are running. its a XL fwd

A lot of people say the Michelin CrossClimate 2 tires are good. They supposedly handle well and are excellent in snow.

I probably wouldn't put them on my FX4, but I had Michelin Cross Climate tires on my last SUV, and they were fantastic in the rain. If you aren't planning on getting off into the mud, it's hard to beat Michelin.

I replaced the OEM Continentals with the stock size Falken Wildpeak AT3W on my XL. Only 700 miles so haven't yet tested in then snow, but they are 3 peak snow rated. Very happy with them so far in the wet, gravel, mud etc.

I have a set on my car. Living in Minnesota they are about the next best thing to true snow tires.

The only knock that I've seen using them is they aren't the most efficient tire as far as MPG.

Also unhappy with the stock tires on my XLT AWD. Tread close to the wear bars at 26,000 miles, gentle driving, proper inflation, mild climate. I am thinking of Michelin Defenders, as we only get snow a few days a year here in WNC.

I just Michelin Defender 2 on a VW I own and they are quiet with smooth handling. I plan to put them on my Mav when the Conti's bite the dust

I had these on my old truck and loved them. Plan to put them on the Maverick when I need tires. Firestone Destination AT2

Since you're in Chicago:
If you run separate summer/winter tires, go with defender2 + your winter tire of choice.
If you want a single tire that works well in both, the crossclimate are nice, but a bit loud.

If you don't do a lot of winter driving or snow isn't a huge issue, the defenders will be fine as well.

I got the kumho crugen HT51 (which is a cheaper knockoff of the defender) and it is surprisingly a good tire. Only downside I found is that its slightly louder in wet weather, but not a big deal.

As for tire size, don't do some crazy oversized tire. 235/65/17 is probably ideal.
245/65/17 is generally accepted as the largest without issues, I wouldn't go bigger than that.

Personally, I got 235/70/17 for a slightly thinner and taller tire, but the difference between that and 245/65/17 is minimal.

Since you want a smoother ride, I didn't mention all terrain tires which I don't know much about.

Haven’t had to replace the OEMs on my hybrid XL yet. Can’t complain about them, but haven’t driven them in really harsh winter conditions (NC).

Probably replace them with Continental Cross Contacts when the time comes. Had those on my previous CRV and the wife’s Highlander and were really happy with them.

Not just snow, they are terrible in the rain as well.

Dunno, I’ve driven in some torrential rain and haven’t had much trouble. Not the greatest tires ever or anything but not the worst I’ve seen.
