Recommend a tire for me!

I’ve poked at numerous threads, read through oodles of comments, and can’t make a solid decision on where to head next.

My current situation: 14 month old maverick with factory pirellis (fx4 pkg). They’ve been ok, but not great. I’ve slid around in heavy snow, and I’ve gotten semi stuck in some loose sandy shoulders on roads. I do a decent amount of trail running, camping, etc that takes me off paved roads a few times a month, but not crazy off-roading.

Use case: live in Pittsburgh pa, it’s a work truck (carpentry) and mostly stays on city streets for 90% of this. My hobbies take me on brief stints of rougher stuff, but never more than a few miles at a time

BUT, we have a small cabin in Maine. So thrown in the mix are long highway miles followed by some rural gravel/dirt roads, and heavy snows/ice in winter.

Swap winter specific tires and call it good enough for winter? Do some wildpeaks or similar knobby for better all year? Share your wisdom internet gurus!

They are popular around eastern ok. Costco was $200 less than discount also (wife’s Outback uses the same size as the Maverick).

Just picked up my new snow tires for my 24 Mav Lariat (Not putting them on just yet as I am planning on driving from New England to western SC over Christmas and don't think I want to listen to them for almost 1000 miles each way.) Plan to put them on when I get home as I hope to head to Northern Maine snowmobiling early in the new year. Truck came with Michelin 225/60/18's. Had 17 rims from my Escape that the tire dealer says will fit fine. Bought Nexen Winguard Winspike3's in 225/65/17 for the rims. (Escape Titanium had 19 rims with low profile tires.) They are a unidirectional tire, had similar on one of my Edges and liked them. Tire dealer checked his computer and it says that if my Mav Speedo is reading 65, I will actually be going 64.75... Close enough. lol. Always do your homework when buying tires. Dealer's original quote was 179.00 a tire. Found online at 98.63, they matched, saving me over 80.00 per tire...

I like Michelin Defender 2 but can’t go wrong with Cross Climates either

I'm liking the Wildpeak AT3W at the 235/65-17 size that came as an option on my XLT 4K AWD. Here's why:

1. they carry the "three peak" Severe Snow tire rating. The Pirelli's did not have the rating despite being a A/T tire.
2. I find them to be quiet for an A/T tire, nearly all-season level quiet.
3. I like the slightly wider and taller 235 size from the factory - a noticeable enhancement to the stance.
4. Treadlife is also rated slightly higher than the Pirelli Scorpion ATR at 520 vs. 600 Wildpeak.

These are my thoughts after 1,800 miles. Granted, my truck and experience are still relatively new, but I'm glad to have gone with the option. I live in Central Ohio and spend significant time in Pittsburgh area. Obviously, weather is quite similar.

The AT3W is about to be replaced with the AT4W but it looks like this size is still avaiable in the new generation.

If you are looking to run only one set of tires and still spend most of your time on pavement/hard packed dirt I would look at the Yoko Geolanders.

They are a very mild AT so should still hold up well and not be a noisy heavy tire for daily use.

Put A/T Trail Wildpeaks, on my FX4, they are an upgrade from the stock pirellis, but you may want to look at KO 2’s or KO 3’s. More of a real off-road tire.

These are all solid recs, appreciate it. Especially those that have run some of these and have reported on handling and noise.

I would be very, very careful with weight. You want to keep it down to have less of an effect on MPGs and acceleration.

I'll throw in my Toyo AT3 recommendation. Been very happy in snow and "off-road" forest service roads. Have hundreds of miles on mine in those conditions and they've held up well.

I installed Michelin Cross Climate on my '24 Hybrid XL after having one of the OEM Continentals get sliced open by a piece of metal on the interstate. I have installed them on all my past latest vehicles, (SUV's) and nerer regretted the purchase. They are great in rain, snow and limited ice.

Seconding Nokian, although the Rotiiva ATs I'm using are long discontinued. The Outpost APTs look good but I think could use some more aggressive siping for ice which is sort of covered by the Encompass line.
