This update is probably to look for signs that it's about to happen - and then limp you home before it does.

All in an effort to not replace more hardware than required if you don't have the problem.
Makes sense.

The bad batch of EGR valves that made it to multiple production lines has a very low failure rate. Less than 1% of 1% supposedly. How they discovered & calculated that percentage is impressive in itself.

Seems the EGR Valve (ie ā€œpoppetā€) can break - opening the intake to too much exhaust. ā€œTeachingā€ the ECU to predict a pending failure will be a challenge for the engineers…

hopefully they will knock it out pretty quick, but we're talking ford software engineers, it took years for them to finally sort out the battery & charging issue that really hit the hybrid folks hard and some ice folks too. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø
But they still haven’t ā€œsolvedā€ it.
Fix coming in Q1 of 2025.

Ya - that's doesn't seem like the sort of thing you could sensor watch for.
Maybe it shows itself sticky before the break, slow reaction times, maybe another set of clicky-click actions after shutdown, can it move it's whole range then.

On my way home tonight, as I turned onto my street, I got a check engine light. I parked in the driveway and got my OBD2 scanner out. Really long crank to start, then it just died while idling. It restarted normally, and then the next time when I was checking something else like it sounded like it was trying to kill the starter again.

Going to be a fun phone call with the dealer in the morning, seems pretty much what the symptoms to watch for are, didn't test motive power too much yet.
(The POS OBD scanner I had in my garage didn't work)

I could be wrong, but it quacks like a duck, no?

Is your build date within the range of this TSB? An ā€œextended crankā€ is a symptom. So is a gas smell on your oil cap. Check it out:

It is
Lovely, managed to miss that one in my search. I figured trouble starting was on the way to not starting and that recall notice has been sitting on my table for a couple weeks

Oil level is normal but does have a fuel smell. Still need to call the dealer, just a different issue apparently.

I have the gas smell but cranking is normal. I’m waiting for results from Blackstone to see if they find any oil dilution…

Here is some additional info on the TSB:

Took mine in this morning, codes had all cleared were just communication failures and I may need to get my nose checked
