Since not everyone's Vehicle list shows what trim level they have - it becomes impossible to know when settings or actions should apply.
For instance I'm sure I saw some with XL trim comment - in which case there are no rear seat sensors - system merely pays attention to doors opened/closed and seat belts clicked.
I have XLT and gotten confusion in rear when a kid moved from middle to edge when mom got out. Despite door opening, the order must have confused things and system thought all 3 should be there. All we did was next stop - opened door for a moment, closed - confusion gone.
For those with Sync 3 here's the manual, which this part makes me wonder if there are actual weight sensors in back because even this feature doesn't say there is, or it's doing what non-Sync 3 does - which I think is true:
HOW DOES THE REAR OCCUPANT ALERT SYSTEM WORK
The system monitors when rear doors have been opened and closed to indicate the potential presence of an occupant in the rear seat.
A message displays in the information and entertainment display screen and an audible warning sounds when you switch the ignition off after any of the following conditions have been met:
A rear door is opened or closed while the ignition is on.
You switch the ignition on within 15 minutes of a rear door opening and closing.
You switch the ignition on within 15 minutes of the alert having displayed or sounded.
REAR OCCUPANT ALERT SYSTEM LIMITATIONS
The system does not function if any door is removed.
The system does not detect the presence of objects or passengers in the rear seat. It monitors when rear doors are opened and closed.
Note: It is possible to receive an alert when there is no rear seat occupant, but alert conditions are met.
Note: It is possible to receive no alert when there is an occupant in the rear seat, if alert conditions are not met. For example, if a rear seat occupant does not enter the vehicle through a rear door.
Note: The audible warning does not sound when the front door is opened before you switch the ignition off.
SEATBELT REMINDER INDICATORS
This lamp illuminates if you do not fasten your seatbelt when you switch the ignition on. The lamp switches off when you fasten your seatbelt or about one minute has elapsed.
When the initial warning expires for the driver, more warnings are provided for the driver and front passenger. This lamp illuminates if you or your front passenger do not fasten the seatbelt buckle and the vehicle speed exceeds 6 mph (10 km/h).
Note: To avoid inadvertent warnings, do not place large objects on the front passenger seat.
This lamp illuminates when you switch the ignition on, identifying the number of seating positions with fastened buckles. It illuminates again when a seating position changes from unfastened to fastened.
This warning displays if an occupant unfastens the rear seatbelt buckle or it becomes unfastened. Note: If a rear seat is unoccupied, or an occupant never fastens the seatbelt buckle to begin with, the warning will not display.
Friends! Let me tell my story. This is my pain that has been going on for a year now. On the day I received the car the first time I started the engine, I got a rear seat signal on my display. I showed this to the manager, who advised to just buckle up and take the car as is and then it would be fixed. Every once in a while the sensor would go off, but it didn't really bother me. I had no worries because, I could press the OK button to stop the beeping. During the next recall (there were about 5-6 of them already), they updated the software and the screen lock appeared and the OK button disappeared. Now I can't see anything on my screen until I fasten my seatbelt or turn off the car and restart it. This has begun to mar my trips.
Been to the dealer 4 times in 2024 showed the problem, gave the Maverick away for a few days and they confirmed that “YES THIS IS A PROBLEM” but we can't fix it but we will take it to the main office. When I pull into the parking lot put the automatic transmission in “P” mode and remove the belt my screen locks up. Until I put my belt on I can't use my screen, even if the “handbrake” is on. If one of the passengers has taken off their belt - the screen locks up. I have to mute the car and restart to get my screen working again.
I tried a new try at 2025 at a different dealer and was told we don't see your complaints or inquiries about this. Meaning the other dealer did not make any notes on this issue. This dealer told me - “this message is for your safety!” So if I'm in the handbrake in the parking lot, without my seatbelt on, it's not safe to make a phone call or check tire pressure? - “it's because your engine is running.” Then I turn off the engine unbuckle my belt and the service manager's belt, start the engine again and miracle, the screen works without the belt, with the engine running too! My car was taken away for 2 days and still no solution to the problem. It is a problem because you are carrying items in the back. Where am I supposed to carry them on the roof?
They're testing the belt! And I'm complaining about the software! We can't find common ground because the problem is that, missing the OK button to stop this hemorrhoid. If they can't fix the problem, just bring back the OK button so I can stop this please.
I found a solution and showed them this. When I'm driving on the freeway at 110km per hour and the screen locks and the sound blows my mind, I speed open the driver's door to clear the sounds and unlock the screen. Safety!!!
Once when my screen locked, the second screen with the map hung up. I was driving with no map and no idea how much fuel I had left and no right to call - like being in an AI movie when you're overrun by robots.
I was really tired. I put the car up for sale and have already bought myself a sedan while this tract is for sale.
