Hi everyone. First time posting. Did a search for this and didn't find anything, so here it is.
Have any of you relocated your rear camera? I have my tailgate down often. So the location in the emblem does not work for me. I have a Lariat Hybrid with a trailer setup. My business is in Woodwork and cabinetry. I'm always hauling materials and delivering product.
Thanks for the help.

The least hassle would be to buy an aftermarket camera you can stick on as needed and just mount the screen in your cubby next to the infotainment screen. Or suction cupped to the dash or windshield. There are some pretty decent wireless cameras so that you don't even need to hassle with running a data cable. Still need to power it, but hey, there is 12v pigtails right there at the tailgate! Or get a wired one and just run the data (and probably power) cable in from one of the rear passenger windows up to the screen.

With a load like the one pictured there really is no good place to relocate it to. I plan to buy an aftermarket dashcam for multiple reasons. I'm going to get one with a very wide angle rear view and mount it somewhere at the top of the back side of the cab.

This will get me many things for relatively low cost.
- recording capabilities
- recording when parked front & rear
- dedicated screen for rear view that have view of bed contents
- possibly enhanced night vision view (not sure there is a model with acceptable starlight capabilities yet)

I installed similar in my SUV 6 years or so ago to get a rear view for parking and recording capabilities. Running a new line from dash are to the rear of the cab and finding a way out the stock brake light assembly might we'll be easier than relocating from the tailgate.

Can I buy a better camera and fit it in the same place as the current camera?

You could, but if you spend the $$$ for a better camera it might be beneficial to just mount it independent vs replacing the existing rear view.

This way you're not limited by the in dash system ways of viewing it.

As I remember it plugs in.
I’m sure with a little ingenuity you can extend the wiring and mount the camera somewhere else.
¿Maybe mount it securely by drilling a hole somewhere in the bumper?

I need to research this but here is my idea:
- the stock camera is in the tailgate logo
- I should be able to get to the camera wiring harness after removing the inside tailgate panel.
- add a switch between the stock camera harness and an auxiliary camera on the top of the tailgate
- then no need to route new wires to the dash, or add power to the tailgate, and the rear view will show on the stock dash screen

Love it!!
I’ve changed the tailgate badge. You’re correct. You’ll have fairly easy access by removing the tailgate panel.

I’m faaaaaaar from an electronics expert. I assume the wiring can be adapted so the new camera will “talk” to the display without major surgery.?.?

Wouldn’t a mirror swap the image right to left.

plenty of options on Amazon. I'd go with a bluetooth setup and power it off the reverse lights. stow the display when not needed

Great point!!
Things wouldn’t be left to right, but everything would be upside down. Car behind you— roof on the pavement-wheels facing upwards.
I’d suggest reinstalling the info center, that’s in the dash, upside down to address this issue.

I've considered this issue a bit, and looked into mirrors. Using two would allow the image to be upright, but the camera's wide angle view makes this whole concept a non-starter. I've wondered how tough it would be to fabricate a hinge for the top of the blue oval tailgate badge that would allow it to pivot out 90 degrees. Any such hack would render the display's graphic overlays inaccurate but that's no big deal. Has anyone had that badge off and learned whether this concept might conceivably work?

I’ve had it off. With a little creativity that might be the perfect answer!

BTW- You DID know I was kidding about the mirrors, right? 😀
