My wife and I just took a short 4-day road trip from southwestern Utah to southwestern Colorado and northwest New Mexico and northern Arizona to celebrate our 40th Anniversary. We are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and we wanted to go to do service in two recently dedicated LDS temples: one in Grand Junction, Colorado, and the other in Farmington, New Mexico. We like doing road trips together and so far have attended 66 temples throughout the U.S., as well as 4 in western Canada, and the Tijuana Mexico Temple.
In between Grand Junction and Chama, New Mexico we drove through the beautiful San Juan Mountains in Colorado with short stops in the historic mining towns of Silverton, Colorado and Durango Colorado on our way to Chama, New Mexico. We passed over several summits of 11,000 feet.
In Chama, New Mexico we took the all-day-long Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad trip, a 3 ft narrow-gauge heritage railroad that operates on 64 miles of track between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado. They bring the rail passengers back to Chama by bus. From Chama we drove on to Farmington, Mexico. From Farmington we drove home.
The photos below show the five times we gassed up on the 1,168 mile circular trip, in our 2023 hybrid Maverick Lariat, starting at home with a full tank: 1. Salina, Utah (along I-70); 2. Clifton, Colorado (just east of Grand Junction); 3. Farmington, New Mexico; 4. Kanab, Utah; and 5. Santa Clara, Utah (back at home).
On the trip we put in 31.253 gallons of 88-octane ethanol-free Clear Gas brand gasoline, all from Maverik Adventure Stops along the way. Our overall miles per gallon for the trip was 37.372 MPG.
Needless to say, we love the real-world extraordinary gas mileage we get in our 2023 hybrid Maverick!
