We took our first long trip (more than 300 miles each way) in our 2023 Maverick Lariat Hybrid this week. The distance from our home in Santa Clara, Utah to Mesa, Arizona and back was 872 miles. We used a total of 22.916 gallons of gasoline. That gave us an overall average of 38.05 MPG for the trip. The distance to Mesa, Arizona was 435 miles (we took different routes to and from) and from Mesa to Santa Clara, Utah was 437 miles. The amount of gas used to Mesa was 10.987 gallons. The fuel used from Mesa to home was 11.929 gallons. It was quite windy on the way home and we had a number of 7,000 foot passes on I-17, and U.S. 89A to climb going home via that direction. The MPG on the trip going to Mesa calculated to 39.59 MPG. The return trip to Santa Clara, Utah measured at 36.63 MPG. Not too shabby!

On the OP’s route driving the OP’s speeds I’d estimate my Ecoboost would have averaged about 29-30 mpg.
On flat land Interstates doing 80-85 mph
I average 31-32 mpg consistently.
My local Appalachian mountain roads at speeds below 70 I average 27 if I behave.

Now that was a 12V battery charge!
Or at least 2 long float charges.

I'm guessing you didn't benefit from a tailwind on the way home?

No, just the opposite. Had a headwind straight onto us on the return leg. The Maverick is not a very aerodynamic vehicle.

By the way, at the last regular 15,000 mile service the dealership changed the maximum S.O.C. of the battery charging circuit to 100%, which is where Ford should have set it for AGM batteries. Evidently they set them at 85% back when they were sending them out with FLA batteries to keep from overcharging them since that would dry the cells out. That is not a problem with AGM. Now we stay consistently between 90% and 100% SOC with it usually around 97%.

Excellent.

But that SOC% reading is more along the lines of the industry standard tables, not Ford's SOC scale.
Which means 97-100% really means no problem - not toeing any 12.1 V line there with battery saver "features" kicking off.
Though I'd be curious what that PID says since fully charging up an AGM no problem now.

Were those downhills steep enough into the wind to actually get some ICE off coasting or EV only mode?

Definitely was able to do electric only on down hills despite the headwinds. We drive in ECO Mode and I run the EV Coach. My wife prefers the Economy view when she drives. I believe if there hadn't been a headwind on the way home we would have matched the MPG we saw on the trip to the south a few days earlier.

As far as the charging goes, I was able to monitor in real time as it approached 96% SOC and at that point the charging voltage dropped (to a trickle charge level). My observation is that the BMS is adjusting both the charging voltage down and tapering current down significantly as the battery reaches close to 100% SOC.
