Rattling Door

Well, it seems when I figure out and solve one rattle, a new one pops up. Sorry for the tangent.

I was just wondering if anyone has come across this...it seems all forums and threads I've searched for seem to be about a speaker rattling. This is not a speaker issue.

When I drove, I would hear a rattle from the rear passenger side. I'm 99% positive it's coming from the passenger rear door-specifically from the right bottom portion of the door panel. When I slightly slap it, I definitely hear vibration/rattle/whatever you want to call it. The mystery sound is triggered from the slightest of uneven road surfaces. You hit a small imperfection and you hear it and even if the road immediately smooths out, it lingers for two to three seconds and then dies out.

My guess is it's a plastic on plastic or plastic panel on metal door frame contact. It's driving me nuts as much as I want to ignore it so I was thinking about removing the panel and adding the thinnest(1/16") self adhesive closed cell neoprene foam sheets on the underside of the panel. The basic idea is to create a vibration absorbing barrier.

Not sure if my plan is sound. Anyone run into this?

This is a common concern. The truck was designed to be an economy vehicle and it shows in it's rattly easy-to-scratch plastic interior bones regardless of trim level. I started looking into this before I even bought it but have for the moment just left it be.

To troubleshoot you can do simple stuff like using thin rubber wedges on the door card edges to narrow down the source of the rattle but I am thinking you will isolate one only to find more. Lots of threads on the topic of "rattle", seems the best results come from tackling the problem in full force with extensive sound deadening measures.

I read a story years ago about a disgruntled assembly line mechanic working for Cadillac. He tied a string around a Coke bottle and hung it inside the "B" pillar of a Cadillac being assembled. Inside the bottle he placed a note: "Bet it took you a long time to find this rattle!"

My dad bought a new Dodge car back in the 60's that had a bad rattle in the front seat. They found an empty pint bottle of Jack Daniel's wedged under the backrest cushion.
