A couple of "why" , "how come" "how do you know" questions regarding the hybrid:
1. Why does the hybrid version have a remote locking fuel filler door but not the EB version?
2. The 2022 window stickers for the hybrid listed 42 mpg city. The 2023 model year the window sticker indicated 40 mpg city. The 2024 window sticker has 42 mpg city. All three years showed average mpg to be 37 mpg. Why did '23's have 40 city mpg?

1 may be different fuel pump/ system?
2 depends on running the federal test. I Believe it is up to the manufacturer but I'm not sure.

Hybrid fuel tank is pressurized. Keeping the fuel under pressure helps to keep it from going "stale". Makes it harder for air/contaminants to get in.

The electronic fuel door release is not a lock as a security feature. When you press the button, the pressure is first released, and then after a brief delay, the door pops open. That is its intended purpose, not to keep anyone out.

If the door does not release automatically, there is a backup release - see your manual.

A determined thief/vandal can still relatively easily find their way into your tank, though manually releasing the pressure may spray them with fuel in the process.

1. The hybrid has a vacuum on the fuel system I think. When you push the button, the vacuum is removed allowing the door to pop open.
As far as the different mpg on the years, I don't know.

RE: Fuel tank presssurized in hybrid = good to know. I don't have my hybrid yet, just got an email from Ford this a.m. that it shipped today, Monday 10/30/23. It was assembled/produced 10/27. PDQ from what I have read here. I will read the manual cover to cover :)

2. wasnt this because it was suppose to be an average of the vehicles based on sales volume.. with the tremor now a part of that, it brought the average down.

RE: Tremor and sales volumn = The Tremor has the 2.0EB so I doubt Tremor MPG affects the calcs on a hybrid. Also, in 2023 all w/EB are AWD, Tremor is 4WD. Window stickers on those respective models show different MPG depending on drive type.

There were a few threads on this when the 23 stickers came out and no one had a final answer. Some say it was a change in calculations for the year (which with the new sticker now seems unlikely), but it seems more likely that it was Ford vs. EPA estimates. The early 22 stickers were 40 and changed to 42 after EPA testing. It's possible the EPA didn't do their own test on the 23 and so it was left at the conservative Ford estimate.

Now that you mention it, I recall my wife's 2011 Prius had a warning about not running it to empty. I think there was a bladder inside the tank and if you ran out of fuel the bladder was a PITA to reinflate, it was problematic and you couldn't just pump gas into the tank. It required dealer intervention. So the fuel filler door to release pressure makes sense now.

The pump thing might be right. Seems that I read somewhere that the door had something to with the pressure.

I can just say that my cumulative MPG in past total 8 months is 40.3. That is including two multi-state road trips. In town, in a hilly area, I am getting 40-50mpg....

Not so much stale, rather increasing the ambient pressure in the tank means the gasoline vaporizes less readily so more of it stays liquid to be pumped. Some of that vaporized gas can be scavenged via the Evap Purge Solenoid, but otherwise is mostly lost fuel.
