Back in the day a mechanic told me when he tore down an engine if it used Pennzoil there would be more sludge. Thats why I always used Valvoline
Back in the day (60’s, 70’s), I heard that about a lot of oils, mostly Castrol. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I truly believe motor oil formulation has changed since the 1900's🤣

I wonder if the Amish talk about what brand of hay or oats, gets better performance from their horse OR what's left after you lower your buggy? High performance horseshoes?

The only downside to stocking up like that for typical personal use is that the additives start to separate from the base oil the longer they sit.
Supposed to be good up to 5 years at room temperature. Supposedly.

Well, the oil geek has always had Amsoil signature series as number 1, followed by Pennzoil ultra platinum as number 2. It’ll be interesting to see what the new number two spot is going to be. ;)

Old wives tale between Pennzoil being the #1 brand, and early emissions control systems bringing in more contamination to the oil in motors that were already laboring with pathetic power output.

There are differences in base oil and additive package quality in modern motor oils, but basically anything that passes a major manufacturer test (like Dexos 3) is guaranteed to be of high quality, use with confidence. The GTL oils that SOPUS had on the market were just a small notch better for people that do long intervals, severe service, or just really care that much.

If there is one small good takeaway from this, it's that GM did not allow SOPUS to just kick out a new formula without completing the Dexos 3 certification again. I always thought it was a bit of a formality, but I guess not, GM really wants a complete test.
