Really it seams smooth to me it’s definitely not like the bumpers or bed rails…
I mean it’s somewhat smooth but not ready to paint smooth like the Ranger handle I purchased
I am sure the level of texture varies from batch to batch

Wanted to paint match my tailgate handle from day one didn’t understand why Ford would just do the door hangles on the Lariat and not the tailgate… Anyway it’s done now and looks like it should have from the factory…

Picked up a new tailgate handle from one of the online ford parts dealers and took it apart the pivot pin was a PIA as they peened the end, but a pair of vise grips massaged it so to speak so it could be pulled out…

Once apart I prepared the handle and the base for paint even though it was new I cleaned it with some wax and grease remover then scuffed up the plastic with a medium scotch bright pad, cleaned again.. Applied some adhesion promoter then some medium gray primer. Shot 3 coats of azure gray and 3 coats of clear… Let the parts set for a few days then reassembled and installed on the truck…..

Even thought I bought my truck with the BAP trim package and like the looks of the emblems, I wanted to change the emblem and match some of the Carbonized Gray accents I have already added and will be adding to the truck so I picked up a used rear emblem including camera off of eBay to paint….

Wont go into details as we all have seen painted emblems….

Have also painted the grill emblem and grill bar Carbon Gray will post once they are installed… Want to keep it this way for now may switch back to the BAP emblems if I get tired of these…
Question about painting the emblem, did you strip the chrome parts or just sand?

Ive been painting cars and plastic body parts for years it was as is the original one smooth enough to paint there is no real texture on it at all..
I hit it with some wax and grease remover scuffed it up good with a light to medium scotch bright pad washed it again and was on to painting….

I don’t know if you could really strip the chrome it’s fairly thick
I actually lightly media blasted them. We use coal slag as a media in our cabinet and as it breaks down to a finer powder it seams to give a perfect texture for the paint to grip…. I also use an epoxy primer on them before paint…[/QUOTE]

I have a blast cabinet. Wonder if glass beads would work also? I have read to use epoxy primer.

Yes it will work just lower your air pressure I run about 50psi when I’m blasting plastic parts also keep the gun a good 12- 14” away and just lightly etch the chrome you don’t want to blow thru the chrome….

Nice!
Did you also do clear, or was it one with base & clear in it?
It was one of those with paint and primer. RUST-OLEUM, got it at WALMART. No clear.

What makes even less sense is the tailgate handle is the same part as the previous gen Ranger
I bought a PTM handle from a Ranger so it didn’t have to be sanded smooth
No need to sand it smooth, it's already about as smooth as it gets. You just scuff it up with some Scotch-Brite from your local automotive store and it shines just like the OEM paint. I also purchased the bottom tailgate opening cover off Amazon and painted it as well, I believe Mabbet makes it.

I did 3 coats of primer, 3 coats of base and 3 coats of clear.

I got them thru Amazon (Aunginsy). I painted to match. 🤓
Well, I read this post again, I guess I should be kind of flattered to people talk about it like that. It really makes me kind of unique. Kind of a real ego boost.
