Noisy engine in cold temperature start

sorry to hear that, but I don't think it's related to this thread because you have an ecoboost and these other posts are hybrid.

eh... it's a pretty general thread. OP had a hybrid, but it's in the Issues section and the symptoms were the same. Plus the section it's in. If anything it can be chalked up to an EB having the same issue.

Code is a p2112 - Throttle actuator "A" control system stuck closed.

Restarted, issue was persistent. Shut off, waited a bit, issue went away but the CEL remains. I'm going to wait a bit and a couple more restarts/cycles to see if the CEL clears but it likely won't as it's a permanent code.

The bad part is that is was running on remote start while I was inside. So easily 10 minutes of it running this way. You'd think a CEL for something like that would cancel the remote start... Especially on a vehicle that honks twice to remind you it's running if you get out of it, just sayin..

Once I could tell it was running normally I restarted again and decided to take it for a short trip. Everything seems fine, but if the CEL doesn't clear than I'll get it checked out.

I think Ford has some history of throttle by wire issues but I have not heard of anything recent affecting the current 2.0 ecoboost engines in the Maverick or anything else.

It could be extreme cold, especially if you park outdoors, but I would definitely have the dealership look at it. If it is just extreme cold related, I would think a block heater would help.

Yea a quick search showed throttle body replacements for the issue and it seems most likely just related to the cold.

I do park in a carport that has a thick tarp in the front to keep the snow out and it's fully covered, but it was -15ish yesterday and 7 today when I started the truck. The engine was clearly not happy yesterday but I'm just shocked it ran on remote start with it misfiring that way. Can't say I've ever had an issue like this before, more just rough start related, but this Maverick clearly does not enjoy cold weather. I'll update if the code clears or whatever follows next.

Just curious if anyone else in this thread has gotten a code or anything other than a grumpy sound.

Like 10+ years ago they used to be super touchy. Replaced a number on our Crown Vics and Escapes. Part of that was the programming was very conservative on the whole electronic throttle concept and if the two position sensors mismatched it'd shutdown the engine.

Yep. Same issue (right down to the remote start [5-10 min]) and same code for me a little over an hour ago. It sounded like a snow blower with the throttle turned really low, which makes sense given the code.

Also got a related code P2119, "throttle actuator control throttle body range/performance." (All from a standard OBII reader, which is an excellent $10-$20 investment for anyone who doesn't have one!)

It was about 10 degrees F outside (where I park). But I have started it many times in below-zero temps with no issue.

Even if I start it up and it's running normally, I will get it checked out because I need a reliable vehicle. I was going to head out to an evening work meeting, but thankfully it wasn't a really important one!

EDIT: Slight correction - I did not remote-start; I hopped in, started the truck, and immediately went indoors, so either the rough running started a little bit after or I did not immediately notice it.

I'm surprised there haven't been any more responses to this; anyway, in my case, another start in similar temps yesterday resulted in normal idling, but I am getting it checked out at the dealer on Monday anyway (without clearing codes). Will report back.

I have an Ecoboost and everytime is cold (I live in NJ) the engine sounds like a Lawn Mower, specially when I'm slowing down. After it heats up the engine slowly goes away. But it's scary.

Ford said it's normal.

Someone on the forum said it's because of the fuel injecting system they use on the Maverick. Si I'll stick with it and try to ignore it.

I forgot to update that the dealer said my throttle body is "stuck" (or was); it was probably associated with the cold, and they'll replace it under warranty because of the stored codes, even though it currently is functioning properly. I am waiting on the part to arrive.

I was kind of expecting piston slap due to looser clearances but given the frequency related to engine rpm, it seems more valve train related. Perhaps loose clearances on the valves. I have not looked into the 2.5 details. If it has mechanical valve adjustment, then they may be too loose(large) when the engine is that cold. I have an ecoboost with mechanical valve adjustment that really sounds nice at idle. I cannot hear it run when stopped at signal lights, and my AutoSS is dysfunctional so the engine IS running at stoplights(mostly).
If mechanical valve adjustment, I would check that first to see if they are at the loose end of the allowable. If hydraulic, it would be unusual for them to fail to close the clearance as the oil pressure would be at the higher end of the range due to viscosity of cold oil. In that respect it could be diminshed oil flow, but the lube is very light - 0Wxx - so should still flow well when cold.
It could also be the cam timing adjusting equipment - phasers - that are not shifting position as well as they should due to thicker oil slowing the flow.
Glad I am not under hood trying to figure this one out. I do think the engine will need to be chilled and have the cam cover removed so the valve train/cam timing gizmos can be inspected for clearance and operation.
Ford engineers should have heard or observed this when they test them in the controlled atmospheric conditions lab. Supposedly they park them for 24 hours in a sub-zero room(LARGE freezer) and then when all wired up to measure, they start them and observe operation. If your parts were at one end of the tolerance they could make noise not seen when other tests were run with parts that were closer to the middle of tolerance or at the other end. Tolerance in this case be passages or clearance between parts. Ford should stand up and either visit locally or send a replacement. I do not know if the noise will cause permanent damage or be harmless.

I’m also having the same issue with my ford. It seems as though it randomly appeared after I started using the morning auto start program through the app, seems like it’s getting worse over time but I don’t know. Only happens when cold start. To exacerbate the issue I can press on the break very slightly and you hear like a grinding noise.
I did also change the CV axle issue that ford has so I don’t know if that has something to do with it. I will drop a video if possible if you guys want to listen.
