My DIY rack is similar in concept to the OP.

This is how I did it using a no-weld method, it works great for my gravel bike and my mountain bike.

FYI steel cable has a minimum bend radius and this looks pretty tight.

Once you exceed that radius the fatigue life of the cable plummets.

I'm not worried because there is almost no weight on the cables.

I might add that not all bikes have wheels that are easy to remove.

I didn't want to remove the wheel either. Ride up, plop the bike in, drive away away....

Welded up some scrap from a recycled city bus bike rack. The rack extends half way up the tire on each side in a V and cradles the wheel so it doesn't move.
