2026 Maverick XLT hybrid with power locking tailgate.. tail gate has a "safety hook" that has to be removed to take off the tailgate.. Is switching to a McGard worth it ...
It might be worth it to you, just for peace of mind. As far as intrinsic value.. Debateable.
You would likely be fine if you just keep your tailgate locked.

Someone mentioned tailgate thefts in Texas. I would wager that most, if not all, were not locked.
It's likely a theft item because it is so easy to remove.
The McGard will make that more difficult, but so will locking the tailgate.

With so many Mavericks around, all with the same tailgate, why would a thief go to the trouble of disassembly to get your tailgate unlocked, when they can go further down the parking lot and take one where all they need to do is just open it?
You don't need Fort Knox, just make it a bit more difficult, and locking the tailgate does that.

Casual thieves go for the easy targets., and professionals are after high end vehicles or their parts, and your Maverick is unlikely to be on that list.

I have a hard folding tonneau cover, that I can walk on, as it's rated for 400 pounds and it cannot be opened with a locked tailgate, so not at all easy to get access to the locking mechanism.

It also secures all the cargo and allows me to carry a load that doesn't get wet in the rain, so more than just a security benefit.

I think that a cover addition would provide you more security as it would take a lot of effort and noise and expose the thief's activities as obviously nefarious, unlike a quick release and grab.

If someone REALLY wanted my tailgate, it would be easier to tow the truck and have all of the parts, and a tailgate lock won't help that.

I've seen places that make benches out of used truck tailgates. Possibly another reason for taking a tailgate.

Don’t all tailgates lock when you lock the truck?

Data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) indicates that Texas consistently leads the nation in tailgate thefts.

A new tailgate typically costs between $2000 and $4,000+ for parts alone, while a full professional replacement including paint and labor can cost over $6000
Unless you go to a chop shop black market vendor.....hell, you might even get one in your color.
