I had a '95 Ford Ranger that got done in by some black ice in a freak ice storm in north Texas (air bag deployed). It was a 5-speed manual Sport edition that I paid $1,500 for. I miss that truck. Hopefully my Maverick XL will fill that empty space in my heart. (And you can add cruise control to a 2022 XL for under $200 if you know how to use ForScan and buy the appropriate switches for the steering wheel.)

I owned two older Ford Rangers, both standard transmission, single cab, RWD for a total about 20 years. Loved those trucks but they were really crude. Extremely dangerous axle hop on rough roads - the old Rangers can literally kill you on a rough curve at speed - bounce you right into the other lane for a head-on. But they got 30 MPG and were real work trucks with longer beds while being a foot shorter in length.

Got my Maverick last week. Didn't like it much at first. It's slowly growing on me. Very nice bed. No axle hop. Decent amenities, though I held my nose at $31,500 delivered. Luxury package my arse - it's the minimal amenities package.

However it is an absolute whale - all the nice folks on this forum boasting about their nimble small Mavericks - you are smoking dope. It is bloated whale with a horrible turning radius. At least compared to my two Rangers. And they similarly bloated the bodywork for no reason except I think maybe to coddle fragile male egos. The hood is a monument to the American male's size insecurities. Stupidly so, because it blocks forward visibility for children and pets in front of the car in the driveway.

If my Ranger had been AWD, I'd still be driving it. Just like that guy. The Maverick got my dollar purely because it was the least bad choice for a small truck - even the SC is similarly bloated.

I think the Maverick will be a good successor to my 95 Ranger that died a few years ago.

So funny. Those could be pictures of my red Ranger single cab and my HPR Maverick XLT.

My Ranger didn’t get anywhere near 30mpg. More like 17 on the highway lol. I had an 08’ v6 4x4 on 32” tires though so that explains the mpg. That was a super fun truck and pretty damn good off road.

I paid for that great mileage in spades. My Ranger accelerated like a snail in a headwind. That 4 cylinder had something like 146 horsepower. It taught me to anticipate traffic bigtime.

I have a feeling I will be a lot more gentle with the new one.

Maverick is pretty much 2000s ranger just not body on frame . As far as size and purpose pretty much a mirror.

Yeah there’s something about the Rangers that get into the blood mate. I have the RWD manual trans and feel you on the axle hop. I live in a warm climate that gets snow like once every 2-3 years so I don’t really need AWD.

My 01 Super Cab 4wd with the offroad package may not have great offroad capability or get good gas mileage, but it sure is slow.

I've owned five or six (lost count) older Rangers across the years, my current ride's a 2008. MPG is awful, ride is bumpy, but a dependable every day driver. I'll be lucky to get several thousand on trade or sell, but can't wait to replace it with a Mav . Photos I've seen of them side by side, basically same foot print, same-ish height, etc. Just prefer these smaller trucks.

I had a Ranger extra cab. One vehicle I should have kept.
