To give you an idea of an almost apples to apples equivalent on Rangers vs Maverick trucks.
The base XL model 2202 Ford Ranger is almost equivalent to an XL model Maverick with the 4k tow package in capacity. You have 4k tow vs 3.5k tow capacity on the base Ranger. Bed is bigger on the Ranger than the Maverick in the Supercab config aka 2 doors at 6ft but the 4 door Supercrew is about the same size bed at 5ft. Ranger on the base model is 4X2 vs an AWD with an XL Maverick with the 4k tow package. Maverick with the ecoboost gets about 4 mpg better than a Ranger and price for each is around 25k for the Maverick and 27k for a base XL model Ranger.

Keep in mind if you go 4k tow package you have to take AWD on the build. The Copilot 360 packages if you want those will add the same overall features to both and cost about the same. Maverick comes standard with auto high beams for example but they are optional and part of the Copilot 360 package on the Ranger.

If you get into bells and whistles then the price spread increases dramatically between the 2. If not then the it really comes down to about 2K in price and a 4 MPG difference.

Another factor to consider when you add the extra equipment package to the Ranger that gives you cruise control, power mirrors, remote key fob, sync, etc. It is roughly equivalent to a XLT model Maverick with the 4k tow package. They both top out at 28k but you get the 4 MPG difference and AWD in favor of the Maverick. Ranger just gives you a bigger bed if you want a 2 door option.

I had planned on buying a Ranger until I test-drove a Maverick. The ride and handling are much better in the Mav and it's also easier to enter which my wife really likes. I don't need to haul or tow much so that isn't an issue. The Mav also has more interior room and the price is the final nail in the Ranger's coffin.
This is about the best comparison summary I've read - having owned both, outside of towing there is basically no reason to choose the Ranger over the Maverick, honestly.

If I was looking for a mid size truck, Ridgeline or Tacoma would be high on the list. Ridgeline tows 5k. Tacoma up to 6,800 depending on configuration. I'd probably get either of them before a Ranger, especially one at the end of its cycle.

My build is Maverick XL Ecoboost AWD (4WD not available) + 4K tow package and Total Base cost with options is $25540 including $1495 Destination & Delivery fee. I think when I built similar equipped Ranger using on line build & price tool it was at least $2k higher, but the destination fee is a couple hundred less.

My suggestion is use build & price tool for a practice build of both trucks. Then try to actually test DRIVE both trucks. They each have their pros & cons, but see which 1 is the best fit for you. Chances are extremely slim you will not be able to "just grab" either truck off a dealer lot, so pay attention to when order banks open and close bc you will be needing to custom order either 1. Also fyi, 2023 Ranger is a close out end of cycle truck with a new version due to go into production maybe Summer 2023 for the MY2024 truck.
I traded a 2021 ranger 2wd XLT for a 22 maverick AWD lariat lux package. Ranger little softer ride and quieter. Maverick better fuel economy by 5+ mpg and has better rear leg room than ranger. Even though maverick is unibody it seemed to ride more like a truck. Maverick 10” shorter so easier to park in garage and easier to enter.

The Mav is cheaper (at MSRP) and more fuel efficient. I had a '19 Ranger XLT 4WD and was getting around 20mpg. Get the Maverick with 4k tow.

The 2024 Ranger is sexy (already out in Australia). With that said, it only achieves about 20.5 MPG (11.5 liters per 100 kilometers). The additional cost, but the vastly different fuel economy makes it a completely different class of vehicle.

If the MY24 Ranger is to compete with the Maverick, they need a true Hybrid option as well.

Good afternoon, I would like some insight on which vehicle is the better choice: A Maverick or a Ranger?

I am just looking for something that is fuel efficient but can handle towing a boat. (I will purchase one within the following year)

I initially wanted a Lariat Maverick + the 1st edition & lux package but noticed it was FWD only. So if I move forward, I would need to switch to the 4WD + Eco boost +4k package. At that price point, would it be better to just grab a ranger? (Or drop down to a XLT maverick with all the upgrades)

I don't need a truck outside of the boat towing in South Louisiana....I will also use it for my Hobie outback from time to time though. I am replacing a 2010 Ford Escape.
Really important to know how heavy the boat is before offering any opinion.

I plan on purchasing an Alweld aluminum boat, which is about 1100 or so pounds before all the extra add ons and the motor. I estimate maybe 1600 or 1700 max weight... So i figured the Mav with the 4k package would be enough... I do want the 360 ford, which the ranger doesnt have.
Maverick Ecoboost AWD, 4k towing. I tow my 3500 lb boat with mine no problem.

We currently have both a '21 ranger tremor and a '22 maverick awd 2.0 (non-fx4) with tow package. I've only towed about 2500 pounds thus far on the maverick, which sounds like what you're looking at towing.

I absolutely love the ranger. It's like an old-school f150 in terms of weight/size/capability. I've rented the current generation f150 numerous times when traveling, and I HATED driving those behemoths. The ranger is easy to park and drive in narrow roads/traffic, yet tows over 7k, which is nice. But it's better to consider it a "slim" fullsize than a true compact pickup. If you get a ranger, I'd go ahead and get 4wd, locker, and 7k tow package, since those are the real differences between the two that justify the extra cost and worse gas mileage.

With your boat weight plus trailer, it doesn't sound like you need any more than the maverick will comfortably do (assuming awd and tow package). Front wheel drive, trailer, and slick ramps are tons of fun - but only for the guy watching you fom the dock and laughing 😁

While I really like the ranger, I'd only choose it over the maverick for 2 reasons: you need to tow more than 4k, or you legitimately need a locker and ground clearance. We had a need for both towing and off-road, and the ranger does these remarkably well. I think the maverick is more enjoyable as a daily driver.

I'm assuming from your name that you're mostly inshore. I doubt that you would have problems towing most flats boats/skiffs with the maverick. I'd only lean towards the ranger if you think you may want a boat to push way offshore on a regular basis.

Hope it helps - both are really great little trucks when spec'd right.

I have a Maverick hybrid for daily driver for the wife and a 21 Ranger Lariat FX4 loaded for towing and off-road. The Maverick drives nice but I prefer the Ranger. I won’t consider any other mid size after driving the Ranger.. I like the mileage of the Maverick but I would choose Ranger first.

I know we've all been replying to an old thread, but since it's a common question, hopefully it will be useful.

I think there's plenty of overlap between the two. My wife has the same perspective as Inthecabin, she likes the ranger better. In the lariat/tremor trim, it has all the gadgets she likes, feels a lot like her explorer sport, and has the high seat/view she prefers. On the other hand, I have had lots of trucks, currently have a '96 bronco on 33s, but at heart I'm a stripped down mustang kinda' guy. I own trucks to access places cars can't, not because I like driving them. I don't go "off-roading" as an activity, but some places we go are genuinely off-road and require capabilities the tremor and bronco have. My most recent car was an '18 GT, and the only option it had was a 10-speed auto, plus the usual aftermarket goodies. That would still be my preference if I didn't regularly need at least awd and some modest ground clearance.

Good rule of thumb is probably that if you really enjoy the feel of driving a truck, which lots of people do, the ranger is a better choice. If you drive a truck only because you have frequent truck-ish needs, but would prefer a mustang or wrx the rest of the time, the maverick will be more fun. With awd and tow, but no fx4 package, it feels much more like a lifted WRX than a truck.

I know it’s an old post, but did you ever decide on a truck and did you ever get your boat?

I ended up getting a xlt eco boost off of the lot and only had to pay a 2k markup. I'm a little salty because it didnt have awd or a trailer hitch, but my old car was on it's last legs. I may order and trade in for a xlt eco 4k 360 but at that price I may look into a used ranger. I don't have a boat yet. The boat was going to be a 5 year in the future purchase. All of the near by rangers are over priced and don't have awd...

Looking towards a decent mako 18 lts in the future.

I've been in the market for a Maverick ever since they were announced. I had been waiting for a Hybrid AWD version, which recently due to a need for a replacement vehicle resulted in me looking for any Maverick. I ended up buying a 2021 4x4 Ranger XLT with 23K miles after test driving a Ranger, a Santa Cruz, two Mavericks (hybrid and AWD), a pair of GM twins (Canyon, Colorado), and a Tacoma.

In the end the decision was between the Maverick and the Ranger and it was determine simply on price. I got the Ranger for $7K less than a comparably equipped age/mileage Maverick. Used prices and post dealer mark-up new prices for the Maverick are nuts. $7K buys a lot of gas even currently, and if I get lucky on a new on the lot Maverick at the only dealer around that doesn't do markup I can trade across and get some cash back out of the trade.
