That’s what Tim told me too. I just thought I heard something different in a recent video. I trust Tim also. Maybe I heard it wrong or he was speaking of something else.

I found your account, I'll look at it Wednesday morning and see who is assigned to your account.

Thanks @fordvideoguy. I know you have hundreds of orders. I’m trying to limit my questions. It’s all good.

Good morning Tim,

Can people order multiple hybrid Mavericks with you 8/2....or is it limited to one per person?

Also, do you handle titling/registration for out-of-state buyers or is that the customers responsibility?

Yes we can do multiple orders and title/registration is done in your state.

So if I want to fly to Kansas & pick up in person...... once it is paid for I can just drive it off the lot and register it when I get home to California? No restrictions?

Is there some kind of temporary tag that dealerships provide in Kansas to allow some time to legally drive before registering?

And if I am taking it back to California....do I pay Kansas sales tax on the purchase or pay the sales tax to California?

Thanks for everything you do......

I could be mistaken, but it has always been my experience when buying "out of state" that you pay the local/state sales tax based on the dealer location, then deal with the hassle of trying to not "double pay" when you drive it home and register it in your home state. I would hope there is something like that for California.

At least up here in WA State, there is a process where as part of the registration process you can show WA state how much sales tax you paid in the "other state" and have that amount of tax waived in WA. Only up to the amount you paid in that other state. Lucky for me, I believe both Kansas and WA are at 6% right now. So I would come out even when showing WA my Kansas sales tax paid. If WA had a rate of something like 10%, I would have to pay an extra 4% when I register it in WA.

Official wording for WA.

"If you are a Washington resident and purchase a vehicle outside this state that you then bring into Washington, you owe use tax on the value of that vehicle. Use tax is the same rate as sales tax and is due when property is brought into Washington if sales tax was not paid. The use tax rate is determined by your place of residence.

You must pay use tax when you license/register your vehicle. If you can show that you paid sales or use tax in another state prior to bringing it into Washington, you may apply the amount of sales or use tax you paid against the Washington use tax you owe (RCW 82.12.035). You may not take a credit for other amounts paid such as licensing fees, lessor taxes, or value added taxes like Canada’s GST."

I don’t buy that, why should Kansas get a chunk of your sales tax when you don’t live there? I’ve never heard of such. I’ve bought two vehicles out of state and paid nothing to the state I e bought them in, the. Registered and paid in my home state.

I bought a custom trailer from AZ a couple years ago (I live in CO) and they gave me a non-resident tax exempt temporary registration to drive it out of state. I simply took all sales paperwork to my local DMV and completed registration and taxes there. I'm doing the same thing on another trailer being built in Michigan. It's a pretty common transaction, but check to make sure it is acceptable on both ends of the transaction.

I would prefer the situation you describe, but am not going to bat an eye if Kansas charges me since I lucked out with the rates being the same in both states. So I am going to pay either way.

It could also be my proximity to a "no sales tax state" (Oregon). Perhaps there is some bureaucratic wrangling going on there so that WA state folks don't just go to Oregon to buy all their vehicles.

As I understand it ,(I lived in Missouri right on the Kansas border for about 6 years), Kansas dealers do not collect sales tax. Instead, the purchaser pays the sales tax when they register the vehicle. This is also how it worked in Missouri. The other two states I've lived in, North Carolina and Virginia, are different. In those states the dealer collects the sales tax and pays it to the state.

I purchased a new vehicle in Missouri about two weeks before I moved back to NC in 2018. I didn't pay tax to Missouri (or apply for a Missouri title) because I knew I was moving. When I got to NC I presented the sales paperwork, paid NC sales tax (which is about 1/2 of what Missouri charges for motor vehicles), applied for a NC title, and got a NC registration. I would imagine that is how it will work buying a vehicle from LM as a non-resident of Kansas.
