LED upgrade-Bed Light/3rd Brake Light

Is updating the turn signal, marker, and brake lights to LED worth the cost?

I installed an F150 LED third brake light assembly. From what I understand, some of the plugs are different depending on part number, but the actual light housing is the same. I elected to splice the wiring (colors match), using good crimps and heat shrink.

Fit is perfect, look is perfect, and OEM quality.

Do you have a part number by chance? Photos too!

It's well worth the investment for the tail/brake lights for the improved response time. LED left, halogen right:

I thought I had a part number, will have to keep looking. I bought off eBay I think I paid about $100 or so, which is pretty comparable to a good set of aftermarket lights. It's been a couple years, so probably more now.

EDIT: I did a quick search and it looks like you have to be careful as some people are listing theirs as LED when they are not. Take a look at the pics carefully and you will see the shape of the red area is slightly different so it is easier to tell. I would only buy OEM. Looks like if you can live with a used part, you can be into it for about $60. If you want to hold out for new, might be able to find a deal or be ready to spend about $200.

Here are some pics:

**The wire harness does unplug from the back of the light, so even after splicing it on, if you had to replace the light you easily could.

I’ve seen some videos online and it does have a big difference. Thinking now to just replace all exterior lights to LED which they do have a combo for on their site (LASFIT). Has anyone done that and if so, any problems?

Looks great
Did you have any leaking problems after removing the housing for the 3rd brake light from the top of the cab? I would like the whiter light for the cab and bed light, but I had on '06 (I know 10 years ago, times change) F150 that I replaced bulbs in. Then the 3rd brake light and the seal was broken. My redneck cheap self just siliconed it, but don't want that issue with the new Maverick.

I have not, been through light rain and a couple of carwashes ...

That's good to know. I remember hearing water draining in and getting the headliner wet in the very first car wash with the F150 (that's when I knew that was a bad design). If you've been through 2 washes and rain then I'll take that as gold.

It has a healthy gasket. Good luck

Well, having LED cargo lights is definitely worth it.

I won’t buy the lasfit again, though. It took less than a year and an L-T15 has failed. It took three weeks for them to reply to the warranty request, and they refuse to send the replacement to Canada even at my expense. They’re refunding me though, so I can’t complain too much.

I figure that if I’m going to end up getting cheap Amazon-quality lights, I might as well buy them through Amazon and throw them out if they die after a year. Diode Dynamics would be $150 just for their cargo lights to me, and I’m not convinced that the expense is worth it.

That's where i have struggled also. Spend way to much or expect a possible failure

🤓 I’ve had a LASFIT cargo LED burn out, I only have one light back there now, wasn’t gonna try and replace it. I’ve had enough trouble with their tail lights to forget about them. They used to be sponsors on here. I don’t think they are anymore. I agree with you. I don’t think $150 for the diode dynamics would be worth it.

This video needs to be shown to Ford corporate and the NTSB. Literally the difference between a non-event and several thousand bucks of mutual damage in a sudden stop.

Anyone install name-brand LEDs like Sylvania / Osram for the lower tail/brake bulbs? They're nominally less bright than the lasfit etc, might need a resistor, but I'll take "made in italy by a conglomerate with a hundred years of automotive lighting experience" please vs the wonky christmas tree designs, DOAs, and early failures reported here and elsewhere with the lasfit et al.

I've got the 921RSLBP2 LED in the high mount, and like the video, it now "blinks" on instantly while the lower ones... take. their. sweet. time.

As a matter of fact, the Osrams are what you see in my video above. They're very well-made in Italy, and are the only replacement LEDs I've seen that have a proper heatsink design for longevity. I use them wherever I can with the knowledge that they'll outlast all the Chinese designs, i.e. Lasfit, Diode Dynamics, etc, etc.

And before anyone argues the point, yes, Diode Dynamics do have their own line of products assembled in the US, but their replacement bulbs are made in China. I have a statement from their sales department confirming that.

I used FORScan for mine BTW, not resistors.

Thanks! Good to know Forscan can address it.

Share your assessment of the heat sinking, especially important for the "always-on" required from tail lights.
