Does lane centering only occur after the lane departure vibrations or does it keep the truck centered prior to the truck departing the lane? And If so does lane centering then correct the drift ?

Lane centering is NOT dependent on Lane Keeping.

Yes it will adjust to maintain what it sees as the center of the lane. You must keep a small amount of resistance on the wheel and you will feel it adjusting it’s driving line.

I read that lane keeping allows you to drift further out of the lane before vibrating if you have both engaged.

I don’t know about that. I do not use lane keeping. I really like the Lane Center and have never liked the lane keeping on my wife’s Nissan SUV. To me it’s just iterating. But, to each his own.

They don't work at the same time. They both can be turned on at the same time, but while Lane Centering is active, Lane Keeping is inactive. With Lane Centering active and the steering wheel icon is green, the vehicle tries to maintain the center of the lane. Lane Keeping is inactive during this time.

If for some reason the system disengages Lane Centering, the icon will turn grayed out and Cancelled will appear in the center screen. After a momentary delay the Lane Keeping Aid will re-engage and start doing its job, if it was on before Lane Centering was activated.

So I have noticed if Lane Centering deactivates and you start to drift to the line it may take a moment for Lane Keeping Aid to become active to correct and you may be crossing or across the line by that time. The system is designed that you take over after Lane Centering deactivates, not the system.

The Lane Centering will reactivate all on its own when it can detect the Lane markers again, so long as it's not turned off by the driver. The steering wheel and Lane markers will turn green again and Lane Keeping Aid will disengage. Sometimes in just a few seconds of cancelation.

These are steering Assist systems, not hands-free systems. I have never had any issues with them because my hands are on the wheel and I am paying attention.

The systems work very well. I love them. Once you build muscle memory and intuituveness to them, they are wonderful tools. But they are not autonomous driving.

I fully agree with not hands free statements.

so if lane centering loses track of the lanes and therefore lane assist kicks in why does lane assist see the lanes snd not lane centering?

so if lane centering loses track of the lanes and therefore lane assist kicks in why does lane assist see the lanes snd not lane centering?
A few reasons:
  1. The lane centering disengages because it could not see both lane markers, but lane markers became present enough to be seen by the camera by the time the lane keeping aid becomes active a second or two later
  2. The lane centering disengages because it loses side line markers on one side, but then you cross the visible lane marker on the other side that the lane keeping aid does see. Lane centering requires both lines to be visible. It will go short gaps without both lines, but it will then deactivate.
  3. Sometimes the lane centering disengages for other reasons, like too sharp of a corner that it cannot see far enough ahead, or certain glare situations, confusion from too many lines (or sealed cracks), or certain intersection types/merge situations. But the lane keeping aid is still able to at least ascertain you are crossing a line.

Another thing to note about Lane Centering is that once the system cancels and deactivates the system, it will not just come back on immediately if it redetects both lane markings. Most of the time it seems like it takes 15-30 seconds of consistent lane markings to re-initiate on its own. Toggling the button off and back on seems to speed up that process. I usually just wait for it to come back on its own, though.

I don't like my wife's Acura's lane centering but I like to remain in control and when the lane centering turns the steering wheel out from under my hands I tend to fight it.

I was thinking about this last night driving home in the rain. Does any of this tech work in heavy rain or fog? I can barely see the lanes in those situations so I’d think the camera would have a hard time too. But I feel like that’s when I’d need it the most.

Can I turn lane centering and lane keeping off, but keep adaptive cruise control? On my Maverick, I try to turn it off using the button in the steering wheel, but the system turns itself back on.
