So big reason I'm considering the Lariat Lux is the collection of driving technology (ACC, Lane Centering) and how much it would improve my commute during the week.

Now I understand Lane Centering detects the lines and uses those to put you in the center, but how does it determine the line?

Reason I ask is I noticed on the way home today that you have the paint lines, then you have a very distinct tar line where they've done work, shifted lanes, etc. and used that to cover up where the line was at one point.

Will the vehicle try to follow the tar lines, or can it not differentiate that line from the road?

I've not driven through anywhere they did extended lane shifts, but some of the crappier line painting jobs haven't phased it much even in fairly adverse conditions. Although in particular if the fog line is interrupted a lot due to shoulder repairs it may briefly shut off. There was a section on my regular drive of some 150 ft where it was interrupted every 8 ft and it would cancel through there.

my wife's Explorer has the ACC/lane centering and we have been on some pretty bad road and it's worked great, there have been a few areas where it stopped but there rare and you get a bell telling you its off, will come back on soon as it sees the lines again.

One of the few features my wife's car has that my Mav doesn't, but as I don't take the Mav long distance it's not missed.

I've driven on roads in the middle of being modified with very apparent 'old' lines that were milled and were darker, and then faint 'new' lines that were not the final permanent raised lines, but were obvious to the eye. The ACC system didn't have a problem following the 'new' lines. I imagine its software does a hefty amount of contrast boosting and highlighting in its analysis to determine if there are lines that are brighter than others. But I don't really know, that's just my impression.

Some of my drives go through a highway that has these big intersection gaps where the ACC almost veers over to the right but then corrects itself, and sometimes it gives you the chime to warn you it has stopped detecting and you just gotta be aware in those kinds of situations that it may be more annoying to leave ACC on, and to just take normal control until you're back on 'regular' painted highway lanes.

You'll easily get a feel for it, for where it's rock solid and where it's maybe a little iffy. I think it's wonderful for a commute. You can relax a bit more in my opinion -- other opinions is that it trains you out of being aware. It definitely gives you (me, at least) confidence to do something a little bit distracting once you're used to it, something you might not do otherwise e.g. check an phone notification, dick around with spotify playlist, look out the window and admire a tree or a butt or something.

In an older escape. 2020 I do believe, the lane centering will follow older lines. It does not follow tar but it will follow high contrasting thicker lines like milled up paint
