I understand supply and demand, blah, blah, blah. But it just seems to me current market conditions are a case of, "Just because you CAN charge $12,000 over sticker doesn't mean you SHOULD." My opinion.

My opinion is also that someday, after the current market insanity has passed, many people will remember the dealers who took advantage while they could and will go out of their way to take their business elsewhere. At least I know I will...
No, they won't, we live in a society of instant gratification, the 70;s were the ME generation, we live in the RIGHT NOW generation.

Sure they will, so what is the problem? There is absolutely zero love lost for car dealerships from me, but that doesn't lessen my confusion for these posts. This is one of the foundations of our economic system. Yep, sometimes some people will pay more (their choice), but it eventually corrects and balances out - do you have a better system?

While the cost of these vehicles, to them, has not necessarily risen, keep in mind these dealerships are experiencing extreme inflation in their operating costs just like consumers are and the lack of inventory makes their business much more difficult. Even if that weren't the case, I never badmouth businesses that seek max profit - I invest in them. I'd be a complete hypocrite if I whined about these practices while simultaneously owning stock in thousands of these businesses.

Dealers and Manufacturers have a problem. How can you build and price a new vehicle on Ford’s website only to find out that by the time you finalize with the authorized dealer the cost is $2500 to $12,500 more? False advertising, bait and switch, consumer fraud, what ever you want to call it. State of Rhode Island Attorney General just went after a Honda dealer for ADM and other states are currently looking at this situation also. Ford has publicly said they will reduce future allocations to dealers who charge excessive amounts above MSRP to rein in aggressive dealers. I believe we will see a new model where all cars are sold at MSRP by build to order method. Manufacturers will offer rebates or incentives to move vehicles. Dealers will take delivery for customer and collect sales tax and a fixed doc fee for title, paperwork etc and offer registration with DMV. Dealers will be paid a fee by manufacturer for processing and a financing fee from lenders and have the ability to maintain and service vehicles and handle warranty claims.

Another person who doesn't understand what MSRP is an abbreviation for.

Had 4 salesmen call me today regarding a Maverick XLT. First began with $5k over msrp of $29k. Then $7,500, and then $10,000. We finished out at $42,700 and I laughed at them and requested to be placed on the do not call list. Some smart person went in there and paid like $12k over asking shortly there after. People really need to stop paying these prices. 🙄
I had the same experience with them. This is the same dealer that keeps making news for insane markups. They’re a big part of why Ford issued the memo about penalizing dealers for crazy markups and is setting such specific terms on selling the F-150 lightning when they added a $25k markup and an extra $10k to be first in line. Plenty of dealers are great and plenty are just your average salesmen out to make a quick buck, but these guys are on a whole other level.

FYI - Ourisman Ford in Alexandria is great, highly recommend. Got mine guaranteed at MSRP, in writing, without having to ask.

Well I don't mind a dealer making a profit on their products or services, as long as they aren't adding an unrealistic percentage over cost!! Anything over 15% is just plain robbery! And yes there are stupid people out there that will pay way over that! But as a dealer and a so call pillar of the community as most of car dealerships claim to be, they should protect their neighbors from themselves in adverse times. They should be looking at their sales as long term investments. If you sell a car then you treat the buyer right and back your warranties and services and don't screw them over they will not only tell their friends and family that your dealerships is great! They will buy every new car or used car that they need from you. But if you just screw people over cause you can then you are a SCUMBAG!!!! And this does not only apply to car dealers, this applies to any company, salesmen, service contractor!! You don't want to be screwed over in life, so why would you want to screw someone over? If you answer cause you can, That makes you a SCUMBAG!!!

Is it time for our daily “I didn’t order in advance and want the price everyone waiting nine months is waiting to pay right now” thread?

My opinion is also that someday, after the current market insanity has passed the only car choice we may have will be Black Ladas with price set by government. Bribes welcome!

in my case that would be a 1 hour drive to the next closest dealership. Luckily I don't have any problems with local dealer 4.6 miles away (y)

Just wondering, since we are still technically in a "state of emergency" because of COVID, wouldn't that be considered price gouging and subject to fines and possibly jail time? Not taking either side of this debate but just wondering....

How can you call them scumbags when people are willing to pay? It is what it is, the dealers near me have no new cars on their lot, I really don't blame them for marking up what they do have.
Just like them honest oil companies do eh? If you want it you have to pay.
