How many new Maverick owners got a key code tag when they took delivery of their truck so the key can be replaced if necessary ? The key code will be needed to cut a new key.

I’ll make sure to add that to my list of things to ask for when I pick my truck up next month.

I know I will be breaking all security "rules" including those in the manual; however, I plan to leave a key in the vehicle (Lariat) and use the exterior keypad to lock and enter my vehicle. With the push button start, I hope to never deal with a key again. I am tired of fishing for a key or looking for it if I do not put it on my key hanger by the exterior door to my house. If someone wants to break into my vehicle, I presume they can figure out how to steal it anyway. If I make it easy for them, maybe the vehicle will be in better shape when recovered.:)

I should add I live in a very low crime area. If I go somewhere where I am concerned, I will take the key out of the vehicle

You got two, right? So if you lose one, you can use the other one to get the key cut.

They are lazer cut keys, the majority of dealerships do NOT have laser cut machines, they need to be ordered directly from Ford. If you do not have your key code, it will need to be retrieved from Ford, which sometimes can take several hours to do if the system is acting up (which it usually does.) We charge a $40 key code look up fee on top of the fee for the laser key.

EDIT: Also Ford deletes key codes after 10 model years, so if you plan on keeping your Maverick that long, I would keep the key code in a safe place.

Unless you deactivate the smart key function the doors will not lock with a keyfob in the vehicle.

What does the key code look like? The keys I got have a tag with a barcode and a 5 digit number on it.

EVERY Ford vehicle has a key code, even those with push button start. The dealer is supposed to record that on the Pre Delivery Inspection. Some times it is a sticker on the bag the keys come in. At the dealership I work at we record all codes in a book and it is also in the business system so you can call with a VIN and we can bring it up.

This came up on a different forum as a possible good option.

For my past vehicles I've just gotten a generic key cut and kept it in my wallet. It wasn't all fancy with the encoding to turn the vehicle on, but it opened the doors, which is really all you need if you lock your keys in the car. Admittedly I haven't had a new vehicle since 2008 so I don't know if that's even possible with FOB style keys, but a potential cheap alternative. What do the Mav keys look like?

According to my dealer, the key must have the programmed chip to start the vehicle. Don’t know if a generic cut key will open the doors without setting off an alarm.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Still worth a try for the cost of a key cut I think.
