It is automatically turned off on the highway when not needed.

Yes, the AWD system is not full-time. It only engages when it determines that you could benefit from putting power to all 4 wheels. If you're just steady state cruising, it will essentially act as a FWD vehicle. If you then go to accelerate, it will engage AWD as needed.

The AWD system makes wheel specific adjustments within milliseconds of detecting a slip or spin. It's an awesome, no input necessary setup!

I find it fun to occasionally turn on the AWD feedback screen to see real-time visuals about how much power is being sent to the rear wheels. Even when it is really snow/icy, it doesn't need to send much to the rear to maintain traction (at least in my situation with my tires and driving style).

I have to go up a driveway that climbs 175 feet vertical in 500 feet horizontal. Pretty steep in places. We had snow a few weeks back, and I found my AWD did a whole lot less wandering and scaring-the-silly-human when I put it in Slippery mode before going up or down. I'm assuming Slippery mode affect throttle, but it also seemed to be keep it in AWD.

Here is a video that shows the AWD capability in Park City. I did get the front wheels to spin, but when I put the Mav in reverse, the rear wheels pulled us out. The computer senses which wheels need more power, it's all automatic.
