I know this won't be popular with some, but I'm curious to hear from those who did it.

Obviously I can just walk away from my order and the dealer will be happy to sell it. Right now I'm seeing 7-10k markups above MSRP depending on the car. The "justice" part of my brain is contemplating buying my Maverick when it comes in, whether or not I need it. Then I could sell it to someone for less than they could get it at a dealer. This seems especially practical since it's a hybrid, and people can't even order those right now if they want to, right?

But it seems to me like taxes and fees are where I could get screwed. While I have friends and family in NC (0%), I live in GA (6.6%). The person who buys from me would have to turn right back around and pay the state another 6.6%. It seems unlikely that I could break even on this exchange unless I'm selling it for almost as much "mark up" as the dealers are.

Thoughts?

If you are trying to do someone a favor then just add your tax and registration to what you owe or paid for it. Nothing wrong with not taking a loss. It'll still be less than most ADM. They're happy and you feel good about it.

This is exactly the kind of perspective I was hoping for. Thanks!

Open to other thoughts from both sides still...

You will pay sales tax (and tags and title fee) in your state.

If the person you sell to needs to finance, the truck is then considered a used vehicle which may increase their loan percentage and cost.

AND. If you sell it for more than you paid, you will absolutely be required to report that delta to the IRS and potentially pay income taxes on that value..

I purchased an XLT AWD pretty much loaded off Lot for MSRP 32,735 PLUS TAX AND FEES Total 35,757
in September. I just sold for 34000 with 2100 Miles. I agree be wary of these mark ups you are seeing as Vroom, Carvana etc as they have a much larger audience to sell to. I only sold to purchase a Bronco as I was very happy with the Maverick. Good luck on your decision.

Better off buying some scratch-offs for that quick buck. Far less hassle.

I don't think anyone here that is anxious to get their hands on a Maverick is going to condone what is essentially "scalping", even though from a practical standpoint its going to be scalped by you or the dealership anyway, lol!

From what I understand, if you cancel, the dealer still gets the order rather than it going to the next person in line.
I posted some stats recently that the average vehicle is selling close to $5.5K over MSRP.

What I have in mind to do is the exact opposite of scalping. I declined to trade in my Ridgeline so I could sell it to someone at a fair price (for both of us) rather than give it to a dealer to mark up to insanity. I’m trying to find a way to do something similar with the Maverick that I have the ability to buy for MSRP + tax.

I ordered a hybrid on 11/15, the last day Ford was accepting hybrid orders. At that time my dealer told me it would be May or June before I see the truck. In reality, it will probably be August or September, if not later (a MY 2023?).

I happened upon an avaialble AWD EB a couple of weeks after I ordered my hybrid. Because I knew it would be many months before my ordered vehicle is delivered, I bought the EB. Its color, trim and options were okay for me. I've enjoyed getting to know the Maverick over the past couple of months, and I'm happy with the purchase. That being said, I'm looking forward to the fuel economy the hybrid will get. I'll sell the EB when the hybrid arrives.

Even after paying the sales tax and registration fees on the EB, I don't expect to lose much on the transaction (I also don't expect to make anything). Used car prices are still high, especially on in-demand vehicles. I don't see that changing for the rest of this year. Depending on how much my dealer wants to give me for a trade-in, I may go that route - and avoid paying sales tax on the hybrid, or if I can get decent number by selling the EB, I'll do that. Regardless, I'm going to be selling a Maverick, likley toward the end of this year. I've sold a bunch of cars over the years. I don't see it as a giant hassle.

I do wonder if anyone is actully paying $7-10k over MSRP. I can maybe see someone doing that on an $80,000 vehicle. seems a stretch on a $30,000 vehicle.

I am approaching the "poop or get off the pot" limit for myself with this truck. I will be looking at buying a new Frontier this week. IF my Maverick ever gets built I will trade the wife's car in on it and whichever one we like less will get sold or traded in on her an SUV. I figure Maverick values will stay up so I shouldn't lose any money. I will buy the truck to keep dealer from marking it up 15k like they have their stock orders.
