I don't know if this has been posted before. If so, it was a long time ago. I've not seen it recently.

A diagram of the Ideal Atkinson Cycle. Not specific to any vehicle. But shows an example of the theory behind it.

pressure vs. Volume inside the cylinder

Ford Maverick Ideal Atkinson Cycle IMG_2406

6 to 2 the piston is moving up
3 to 5 the piston is moving down

1 to 2 is compression
3 to 5 is power stroke

2 is spark

The distance (ratio) from
6 to 2 and from 3 to 5 may be
"13:1" in both cases.

But really only the expansion ratio is 13:1 and the compression ratio is a more typical 9:1 as the low octane requirement for hybrid engines would suggest.

Old Mazda commercial for their Wankel Rotary engine said, "Piston engines go boing, boing, boing . . . rotary engines go HMMMMM."
Piston engines still going boing. Wankel . . . going nowhere.

"Boeing Boeing" is the sound tires make when they fall off passenger jets.
