Dont know if I support EREVs, vehicle has 2 powertrains to carry around, doesnt make sense to me, EV carries half of powertrain(no ICE).

And the way Ram(I mean Stellantis), carry a full size 6cyl engine around with you and the EV powertrain, thats alot of added weight.

I like the approach of Ford to Fathom EV the Screw cab and pickup concept, I predict it to be a real seller.

Its got small enough battery to charge from solar(for me). It doesnt weigh 3 tons...$30Gs. Its a win in my urban life.

Honda Insight.

Was getting up to 100 MPG on a good day 25 years ago. (80 MPG average, 75 MPG worst case)

The 5-speed manual got higher MPG than the belt type CVT.

Whole car was assembled by hand in Japan. Almost no steel in the car. Mostly aluminum. (Will never rust) and some parts were magnesium (34% lighter than Aluminum).

Whole car weighed 1850 pounds.
Engine was 996cc. 0.996 liter.

Would go 85 MPH.
Took 30 seconds to get to 85 MPH but that's beyond the point here.

It would take you anywhere you wanted to go at the same speed as everyone else. Plus about 30 seconds. Had air bags and met all Federal regulations of year 2000

1000 miles from an 11 gallon tank.

It was the most aerodynamic production car ever made at the time. Not sure if anything beat it up until now.

We are behind schedule with automotive technology and innovation.
Yes, the Honda Insight was capable of incredible mileage. Never owned one myself. Good perspective on time to achieve high speed. So what, who cares when you choose a hypermilers vehicle. You don't typically buy Honda Prius, Insight, or Mav Hybrid for speed.

That's my biggest issue with EREVs/PHEVs versus a conventional hybrid or EV. Generally speaking, it's easier for a conventional hybrid to be price competitive in total cost of ownership versus an equivalent EREV/PHEV.

EREVs and PHEVs need to carry around an engine, all the associated emissions equipment, and meet all the regulatory standards surrounding ICEs. HEVs do as well, but HEVs have significantly smaller HVBs, which contribute to them being priced more competitively to gas-only equivalent vehicles.

BEVs don't need an engine, emissions equipment, or compliance testing, which saves some cost even though they need much larger HVBs compared to EREV/PHEV/HEVs.

Yes, I agree, EREV have to carry a bunch of extras ICE, fuel, emissions, fuel tank, lines, Etc..

Besides the weight penalty, cost, maint, insurance..

EREVs are a jump back in Tech....they did these just so you could say I put RUG in it...

With change of efficiency, of battery tech, AND motor design, lighter weight and aerodynamics EVs are here with ranges competing with ICE...

That entire video is AI slop. AI narrator, AI written, overly verbose script, with random images of engines and people pointing at monitors.

They claim 59 MPG in normal driving, but none of these have ever been seen outside China. We do not know the test that produced these supposed results, nor if the drivetrain would ever pass emission testing.

Boomers, please stop falling for this garbage. Remember: the Chinese media claimed back in 2012 to have a flying aircraft carrier. They claimed to have stealth fighters that rivaled the F-35, only for them to have the radar cross section of a barn door. They claim to have modern tanks, but video footage proves they lack barrel stabilization, something we had almost 100 years ago. dont forget the crumbling ghost cities.

If China or any of their companies claims to have achieved something, you take it with a Morton factory of salt until it is tested by other countries.

Way back in 1976 that years Honda Civic/CVCC got 54 mpg on the highway and
44 in city traffic with the A/C on.
It had a carburetor,
A five speed stick,
A/C
And hauled ass if you knew how to , ‘stir’ the gear box.

We have not really moved forward. Just sideways.
Got real good at bullshitting the American consumer.
And that car would never meet modern emissions, not even close. And it had no saftey equipment.

You put emissions on that engine, pop it in a modern civic, and it would get 10 MPG. And be unsafe due to it being incredibly slow.

We have moved forward at an incredible clip, a modern 500 HP V8 makes less emissions then that old Civic 4 banger.
Might have something to do with the fact that we keep making vehicles bigger, heavier, and have to cram in more HP in every new vehicle generation, all because people supposedly demand it. If cars were the same size and weight as those from the 1980’s, with today’s engine tech and reasonable HP levels (sub 200 HP), a lot of vehicles would be hitting those numbers.
The proof is in the pudding.

the VW jetta still exists
The Corolla still exists
The Versa existed until last year
Ditto the mirage G4

Nobody bought them. Those high HP, big luxobarges sell. Much like wagons, single cab pickups, and coupes, everyone clamors for more of them to be released and that car makers are ignoring them, only to never buy the few that are offered.

Funny I see them on the road every day. Are they the best sellers? No, they are economy cars, and they are still bigger and heavier, have way more HP, than they used to. They also have worse fuel economy than they did 35 years ago, hybrid versions aside (Corolla). The Maverick isn't Ford's best selling vehicle either, does that mean nobody buys them? I mean that's your argument here.

Most people buy SUVs and trucks now, because automakers market them heavily, and convince people they need them, whether they do or not.
