I didn’t know people were still scraping windshields.

Get a ‘Frost Guard’
Google it.
Has mirror covers also.
Get the right size.
They are fine if you live on a coast. But up north we wouldn't have much room to store them with a family in the Maverick's back seat. Don't get me started about putting it in the bed, because, yeah, that's why I bought a downsized little trucklet in the first place... for my tools.

What we do is first off, order the winter package. If you live down south and only get ice/snow on a rare basis, a simple formula of 1 parts water to 2 parts isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) in a very small spray bottle does the trick. It has a freezing point of around -70C, or -94F . Put that in the driver's door pocket, and your coffee in the center console where it belongs. No more snow brush or Frostguard or anything, just clear of the excess snow with wipers first, then spray. Mine takes about five trigger pulls. Up here we have dry snow, (great for skiing, horrible for making snow men). If you live where wet snow is the norm, Frostguard may work for you if you have the luxury of an empty back seat or bed.

Thanks to someone here for the suggestion to put Pool Noodles into the gap where the wipers are to block a lot of snow accumulation. I find it very helpful!

In places where it gets well below freezing, pouring water of any temperature leads to a lot of other headaches.
I suppose "other headaches" are possible, but it's hard to imagine what those might be as water is going to run down the windshield and drain as the ice melts.

in my personal experience, I've never had a problem using water for ice melting, so I'll continue doing that. If you think it's a bad idea, don't do it. Chip away with the ice scraper.

Has anyone ACTUALLY had a problem with a windshield cracking by using water to melt ice, because I have not.

I searched on Amazon for a car "frost guard" like Cherokee suggested and look at the picture on one of the products ha ha ha
Thanks for the chuckle.
You have to wonder how effective a windshield cover is to prevent the entire car from being covered in leaves and bird poop... Maybe their point is you can at least see where you are going to get to the car wash.
Practically, it's usefulness seems more limited to ice and snow.
A carport is far more effective. 😉

Can you show a pic? I thought the blades couldn't clear the hood....
You asked for it - you got it! Below are 4 pics, start to finish.
  • I'd just parked and turned off the vehicle.
  • Gently lifting.
  • Once wiper arm cleared hood, able to lift blade off.
  • My finger is pointing to the arm's original parked position; shown for reference as to distance.

Just turn the wipers on while the truck in running and turn the truck off while they are up. You have full access to the wiper arm, without mucking around.
