Not sure if this is an appropriate post as I definitely didn't get the Maverick Hybrid for any performance intended purposes, but...

I smoked a newer Toyota Hybrid Rav 4 from a stoplight earlier today. Didn't mean to race anyone but just so it happened that the Rav
was aligned to me at the stoplight and when he pushed it off the line, I instinctively went for it and the magic happened.

Mind you that I was in economy mode so that the response to full throttle was not instant, but as the power started building, the Mav
took the Rav pretty decisively and unexpectedly.

As we slowed down I looked inside the Rav cabin as he approached on my right side and the drivers' face was not a happy one. That's all I can say.

The mav has a great ratio of HP per pound of curb weight. The eco is excellent but even the hybrid is pretty good.

For instance the base f-150 raptor gets 450hp with a 7050lb curb weight=0.0638hp/lb

the eco mav gets 250 hp with a 3600lb curb weigh =0.0694 hp/lb(!)

hybrid 195/3700= 0.0527 still not bad.

Likely wasn't racing you, the current gen RAV4 Hybrid has more power. šŸ˜„
Yeah Rav 4 hybrids are no slouch, particularly the new "Prime" one which was over 300hp IIRC. Kind of crazy, as that's the power our old V8 Cobra made back in the day.

My 2019 F-150 reg cab has a 395 hp 5.0 with a curb weight of 4,200lbs works out to 0.094 hp/lb.

A big chunk of that power is from the rear motor, which only comes on when there’s wheel slippage. So, in the real world the 219 hp of the rav4 is closer to the Mav’s 190.

We have one of each, and I’d much rather drive the Ford.

Yeah I get the impression that the RAV is harsher ride. I had a 2013 RAV4 Limited for a little while before getting the Maverick. The RAV was much better made, way better interior, but it had such a harsh ride, and hear the newer models aren't much better.

Does your calculations take into account the high torque of the electric motors and the low torque of the atkins cycle engine? I drove a coworkers hybrid and it had some pretty good get up and go. It was way more powerful than I expected. In fact, I was kind of surprised that the tow capacity is only rated at 2000lbs.

Hybrids do tend to get low tow ratings. A good example was the 2014-2018 Highlander Hybrid. It had the same V6 ICE as the ICE only model, but dropped from a 5000 lbs tow rating to 3500 lbs. Reason? Hybrids only use the electric motor in reverse!

I assumed it had something to do with the CVT. I am no engineer, but I fail to see why electric reverse would lower the tow rating. Not like I am trying to tow (push?) a trailer at 55mph going backwards. I have towed a lot of trailers in my life, but I am not that good.

Believe me this was debated heavily in the Toyota Hybrid forums. Some owners did do it, but said it was hopeless to reverse up any kind of a slope to park. So sure you could pull the trailer, but try to reverse a 5000 pound trailer with a 20HP electric motor, and you'll be in big trouble. It could also be the lack of the necessary transmission and battery cooling capacity to tow that much.

The eCVT is not like a traditional belt driven CVT. Why they call it a CVT at all baffles me, guess it's the closest thing to it.

That makes sense. I have never towed with a hybrid but assumed low horsepower if the electric motor would be powerful enough due to the much higher torque to reverse the load.
