Had this issue during first 500 miles or so. Very bad almost didn’t buy truck after a brief drive in dealership. Also worried that the seatbelt didn’t lockup after the first hard stop. But it did lock correctly the next few.
I have an insurance app on my phone that registers a harsh breaking action which gave me many dings against my good driving record.
I drove a Prius before the Maverick so it’s not first time Hybrid owner problems. It’s a real brake issue

The secret is to use a light foot on the pedal and brake earlier. You will regenerate the battery and slow smoothly. If you are the type of person who hits the brakes at the last possible instant, you’re going to have issues. Hybrids reward smooth driving.

The problem is in stop and go traffic. Where you can only move up a few feet at a time, just by letting off of the brake pedal. It's not an issue of stopping sooner or using the brake coach, because you are already stopped when this issue happens.

It is embarrassing to be clunking and jerking around. Also dangerous

Yup, the harsh stops happen in slow moving stop and go. We are talking slight advances at 1mph or less! You don't even have to fully lift off the peddle for it to happen. I had some harsh braking at times with my Camry Hybrid, but not under those conditions for the most part.

To be clear, I'm not afraid at all that the Maverick won't stop, it's just annoying and makes you look like a crappy driver.

I drive a standard shift car, an automatic shift SUV, and my hybrid Maverick. All have different feeling when braking. As you drive any of them, you figure how each one works. Also in all these responses, no one mentions having had an accident due to the braking. It's just getting used to. Nothing beats a Hybrid Maverick!

If it was something you could control by changing the way you brake it would be "it's just getting used to", but sadly it isn't. Been driving the Maverick for 2 months now (and hybrids for over 6 years), the Maverick just does it under those conditions, nothing you can do about it. No matter how softly you brake in slow moving stop and go it happens sometimes. It's not 100% of the time, maybe 10%, at least for me. I could do the same stop 100 times, and it would happen 1/10 times for sure.

IMO, not a deal breaker by any means given how many good points there are for the hybrid. It is annoying though.. but so is choosing either a fuel efficient car or a truck w/ a bed.

I agree with you, it's neither hybrid regen nor first time hybrid driver problem. It's a Maverick brake (software) problem. I drove Prius before and own Lexus hybrid now, never had this issue. Other Ford hybrids don't have this problem either. Granted that different transmission acts differently, I drove manual, auto, hybrid, and DCT cars only Maverick hybrid acts like this. It should be an easy software fix though if Ford really wants to resolve.

Yes, one of the Maverick reviewers (Sam Haymart, Test Driven TV Youtube channel) posted in one of the threads on the issue that Ford acknowledged the issue is software to him. People are not making it up.

I may be one of the lucky guys, because I don't think I ever encounted this, and believe you are an experienced driver, and know what your talking about. Have my Mav since March 9th, only problem so far is the drivers door automatic touch lock, and unlock, stopped working, but there is a software reprogram for the BCM that will fix that.

That's just how Hybrid regenerative braking systems feel. Priuses are worse in my opinion.

I am a roll over 2022 fixing to order as 2023. Wanted a hybrid but leary of the low speed brake issues. Is this a problem that affects all hybrid maverick's. What percent have this problem? anyone know? I am on fence about reordering as an eco simply due to brake issues. How widespread and big a problem is it , and is it likely to be fixable? Thanks
What braking issues are you talking about? I have 8K miles on mine and have zero issues?

I have 1500 miles on my XL Hybrid, had the dealership look at the brakes yesterday and they told me it is normal operation for the hybrid…we’ll see about that

Nope have both and swap driving them weekly. Prius has 130,000 miles and likely original brakes due to fade. I apply same break effort to the Prius and it’s still moving. Must been software fixed during other service in June. This problem may no longer active in newer trucks. Mine set in a Mexican desert for months awaiting EPA release.
