I was watching some JMCGarage on Youtube at his 90k mile update and he mentioned Ford had to replace his HV battery. I searched here to see if there was anything out there about this, but seems my search kungfu is weak or there isn't a lot out there on it. Anyone know how common this issue is with the HV battery or a root cause?

He did mention the cost of the battery which was covered by warranty really wasn't outrageously expensive, but we really shouldn't be seeing HV failures. If this is a known issue can someone point me in the right direction. He of course mentions the CV axles issues, and he brings up the heat exchanger problem.

You will 99.99% never ever replace a hybrid battery.

The standard 12v auto battery you can get at any parts store, you will have to replace ($200 +/-) every 3 to 5 years like every other car on the road.

Not a known, or from reports so far, unknown issue even.

Heat exchanger has a TSB for it - so again not a big problem, but recognized.

12 volt battery replacement is a very common issue due to a massive amount of hybrids lack of or inability to keep the battery charged.

Check this forum!

A battery should commonly last at least 6 years or more. Less is a bullshit story.

An AGM battery has a useful life between 3-7 years depending on use.

I have 5 vehicles. One is a classic I drive once every 2 months. I've Never used a trickle charger and it is 8 years old and 12.9 volts resting. My Maverick 10 months old and on my second battery that is being killed. Out of 3 other vehicles only one dead battery a months after purchase, That was 7 years ago. The other 2 vehicles not sure how long.. No trickle down. IF you buy a cheap battery from Walmart or auto parts store of course, that one won't last.

The Maverick has had a known lack of charging issue for 3 years, not to mention the same possible issue with the Escape hybrid

I just want to make sure we don't blame the batteries or a person's driving habits, or the owners responsibility to be a secret charger and maintainer.

He was asking about the hv battery, not the 12 volt.

Yes but....

Your "classics" are "off" when the key is removed. Part of the issue is, with all these interconnected features and services THAT MOST CONSUMERS WANT the trucks never really completely shut off.

Second: people who drive daily; or at least three times a week generally do not have 12v battery issues. Sitting is a big part of the issue.

Third: times have changed. This is not your father's Oldsmobile.

I agree it would be nice to be able to let the hybrid sit for three months unused and come back to everything being fine. This is not reality. And unfortunately for some, this is not a design requirement, and not a manufacturer's warranty item.

There is some merit to them saying "drive it more often". But where do you draw the line? This is the grey area.

HV battery needs to be exercised AT LEAST once a month too. It's not in print, but you can trust someone doing this and driving these since their inception.
Drive your hybrid AT LEAST once a month or prepare for unwarranted consequences.

I drive it everyday and I'm not buying the excuses for dead batteries when they admitted there is a problem.

Yes, I disconnect the battery in the classic. I understand all that you say and the technology. It seems that anytime the 12v battery is mentioned we have the blue ovals attack or make excuses for it. I'm saying stop with the battery excuses and make the charging and draw parameters right. Then let's discuss battery tech After! When some have up to 4 batteries replaced in 3 years, it's obvious what is going on. Higher CCA, AGMs and trickle charging only hides an prolongs the eventuality.

It's not a very large battery and only about 60-65% of it's actually used, the rest being saved for long life aging reasons.

Not common at all, at least with other hybrids. Not a high number of Mavericks with 90K miles yet. HV battery and other Hybrid-specific parts have a 100k warranty, so the case mentioned should've been fixed at no charge. Here's an Escape Hybrid with 400k City miles for a comparison: https://fordauthority.com/2019/08/this-2012-ford-escape-hybrid-has-over-400k-miles/

JMC said it was all covered under warranty. He did find out what the battery would have cost if he had to pay for it. We owned a 2005 Escape Hybrid and it just now needs a battery replaced. It has been degraded for a bit, but still usable. Now it finally needs some love, but the Escape has been reliable. I expect the Maverick to be even more so with the thermal management they have added and the enhancements to the eCVT. I was just surprised to hear of a HV battery needing replaced so I thought I should ask some questions.
