I keep getting key program failure for the plastic key fob in my XL any suggestions?
How many keys does your truck show have already been programmed? IIRC, the limit is 4.

My experience does not have a happy ending. I bought the keys from Amazon but have been unable to find a locksmith to cut them. A-1 locksmith told me their cutting heads are 1mm too big. If anyone knows a local locksmith in the Carrollton Tx area who can cut them drop me a note
I unfortunately had a similar experience and ultimately gave up and returned the keys before the Amazon return window closed. Most locksmiths either would never answer their phone or respond to inquiries submitted through their online forms. The few that I was able to talk to could not handle this key at all - the closest I got was one who thought they could but turns out their cutting head was also too big. I don't get it as I see listings for the 4-button flip key going back at least 8 or 10 model years on a variety of Ford models. 🤔

(The most fun experience was at Ace Hardware who's computer didn't even have a listing for the Maverick 🤯)

Time to regroup and try a different approach...

Has anyone tried to program one of the xl/t keys to work on a lariat?
I realized you asked that a while ago but no one answered.

no, you cannot use a non lariat fob. it lacks the RFID for the door handle proximity locks.

I'm not sure why you're having a problem with cutting the key. I live in a small town and we have one locksmith. He was able to cut the key, no issues. He asked me for the key tag number that comes with the key and used that to program and cut the key. The Maverick key is nothing special and is used on many Ford products.

Yeah I wish I knew why this is such a challenge in the city, but note that I also tried the smaller city near our mountain home with no luck...

Did anyone ask you for the key code? Maybe try the dealer.

You should color out the whole barcode, a line down the center of it doesn't prevent it from being scanned as all the bars remain the same.

There has been many questions on the keys for our beloved trucks and as a locksmith I can say if you lose all your keys you will more than likely have to tow it back to the dealer until our software is updated. HOWEVER I have confirmed on board programming works if you have the original two keys ( two programmed keys ) - you can program them yourself - that has been mentioned here before. Do this NOW !!! before you loose one of the two keys LOL.

On the XL or XLT trucks you can either add a flip remote or just a standard key ( possibly you might want to add two cheaper keys as a backup ) On the Lariat only the fob will work however the emergency key is not required. I thought I would put links to which keys to purchase and you can take them to a local locksmith just to have cut - as long as you maintain two extra you are in good shape adding in the future.

XL and XLT Keys - I have posted multiple links in case one is out of stock -
Remote headed Keys - $23.99-https://amzn.to/40xtAk7 or $29.95 https://amzn.to/3RpQJAH or $23.99 https://amzn.to/3WVGxAX

If yours has a remote start it would be this key - 49.99- https://amzn.to/3wNgDVG 89.95 2 Pack - https://amzn.to/3jsaBq7 45.29 - https://amzn.to/3WUcmdl

Plastic Headed Keys -
16.95 for 2 - https://amzn.to/3HNZe5h 43.21 Ford Factory Blank ( same Chip ) https://amzn.to/3jklzOD If you are wanting to do a "hide-a-key" this one is the one to use due to it being waterproof.

To program you insert the existing first key, turn on ignition, count to three, take out put in existing second key turn on ignition - count to three - take new third key - turn on ignition - leave on - you should hear a chirp and a message key was successful.

For the Lariat -
58.95 - https://amzn.to/3XT89b7 109.95 - 2 Pack - https://amzn.to/40m014U 37.95 - https://amzn.to/3XaDs0h For the Fob to work / be programmed it doesn't matter if the key is cut or not - it only opens the door if the battery is completely dead.

prox.jpg

If your Fob does not have remote start for the 2023 Lariat it is this one - 38.99 - https://amzn.to/40ihWsZ

nostart_.jpg

To program - open center console. Pull up felt cover - place first existing fob in depression - push start button ( without foot on brake ) ignition comes on- count to 5 - remove fob - push ignition off - put second existing fob in depression - push ignition on - count to five - remove fob - push ignition off. take new fob - put in depression push AND HOLD start button down - you should hear chirp and message - key programming successful.

All in all pretty simple procedures and a few dollars and effort now can save you hundreds later !
I am new to this site and just purchased a used 2023 Maverick Lariat. Unfortunately one of the key fobs is missing. Also, The items in the links to Amazon that you put in this post are indicating the items are no longer available. I found this one https://a.co/d/7zCLCie on amazon and don't like to assume but it appears to be the same if you have any other recommendations.

Also, your instructions show how to program if you have 2 fobs. Since I only have one do I just eliminate the "put the second existing fob" step?

If you only have a single fob you won’t be able to program a second key fob. You’re going to have to go to the dealer and have them program a new key.

correct.

this is a security feature. if you could create your own key from only one key, that would be a major risk of valet parking, 'friends' and others making their own key and later borrowing or stealing your truck.

Got the hybrid xlt. If I just copy the key without the fob and open the door that way. Would it trip the alarm?

possibly, but it doesn't matter because the truck also has an ignition immobilizer. you can't start it with a key unless the immobilizer matches, which is part of the fob pairing sequence.

That's perfect for surfing as I usually take the key into the water and keep the main hidden.
