What brand and capacity of USB stick are you having such good luck with?
Try the SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.1, in 64GB or 128GB.
My 128GB is barely 1/3 full with ~6000 MP3s. That is at V0 quality which is one of the highest qualities for MP3.

Well, I picked up a 64 GB SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.2 and loaded my song files to it. The plus side of this is that the files transferred something like five times faster than one of the older ones I was using. The down side....it still acts the same as far as the indexing crap and the system still doesn't always pick up the same source that was in use when the Mav was last used. I still have to turn off the sound system before I exit the truck. So, it's still a crap shoot if I leave the system on when I exit the Mav. Just amazing what Ford has foisted upon us.

I leave a USB stick plugged into the slot in the lower center dash all the time. It has (actually I should say HAD) 1647 songs on it. Over the past week I noticed the number of song files being shown were fewer than what I had originally loaded on the stick. Something like 90 songs were missing.

This morning, they all disappeared. A message came up on the display that said there were no files on the USB device. WHAT THE HELL?

Plugged the stick into my computer and it listed a file with an extension that made it look like a Word file but it had no data in it. Another file was shown as follows. CTR_Z175002Z_3FTTW8E92NRB04871. I didn't dare open it.

I have had to learn to live with the quirks within this audio system to reduce the annoyance it presents, but having to reload my music files onto the USB stick is total BS. It takes over an hour. I feel I shouldn't have to do that at all.

I'm repeating myself here, but I've found that in order to have the system pick up where it was when the truck was last shut off, I've got to turn off the audio system first. When the truck is started again, I've got to wait for the system to "index" the USB stick before it can be used.

HEY, FORD. IF YOU'RE READING THIS, TAKE NOTE. MY WIFE DRIVES A 2013 ESCAPE WITH AN IDENTICAL USB STICK LEFT IN THE SLOT AND IT ACTS NOTHING LIKE THE 2022 MAVERICK. NO INDEXING. NO GAMES THAT NEED TO BE PLAYED. IT JUST PICKS UP THE MUSIC WHERE IT LEFT OFF. SAME SOURCE. SAME SONG. HOW IN ALL HELL DID YOU PEOPLE MANAGE TO PRETTY WELL SCREW UP AN AUDIO SYSTEM THAT WORKED? IF THIS IS HOW MUCH YOU'VE "ADVANCED" THE TECHNOLOGY IN TEN YEARS, I CAN HARDLY WAIT TO SEE WHAT YOU COME WITH NEXT.
You know that file name is your VIN number, right?

Interesting the radio knows your VIN.
More interesting that it would write to your drive. Maybe that is how it remembers where you are in your playlist?
But that is a security feature.
If anyone steals your radio head unit, it won't play in a different vehicle. So there's no incentive to steal it. A stolen radio today is a doorstop or paperweight. 💡

I had no idea that file name was my VIN. I suppose my next move is to see if any strange files with that same name show up on the new USB stick. And if so what would one do about it? Has anyone else ever seen such a thing?

I think that is how it knows where to "resume" in a play list next time.

Also, those times It doesn't were probably "improper" or "too quick" of shut downs and it didn't get time to record your spot. Just a guess. 🤷🏻‍♂️
