Hmm, I just went outside and looked at mine and it definitely looks like that panel will have to be removed. I wonder if it has something to do with what features the truck has? Does your truck have that black panel right up against the mirror mount? Either way it's not a huge deal, I can just remove the panel if needed.
on the xl and xlt i dint have to remove the panel at all

Thanks to this discussion, just installed my Toyota mirror. Paid $120 I think from a Toyota store. Install very easy, just had to finagle it past the black sensor(?) box on the windshield. Don't know if I will still have the truck in 10 years, I will worry about the battery then. Thanks, now on to probably a hood protector!
